State Intelligence Services

The State Intelligence Services (SIS) is the intelligence service of the West African state of Gambia . Until the change of government in 2017, the agency was known as the National Intelligence Agency (NIA) .

history

National Intelligence Agency

The NIA, which was established in 1995, is subordinate to the Interior Minister of Gambia ( English Secretary of State for the Interior ) and reports directly to the President . The secret service is responsible for protecting the state security, gathering information and conducting undercover investigations. From December 2006 Pa Jallow was the general director of the NIA, he was replaced by Malamin Jarju in November 2007 .

According to observations by Amnesty International and Reporters Without Borders , among others , the NIA is acting arbitrarily and only with limited respect for human rights and significantly restricts the freedom of the press . Especially organs of the press and media became the target of the NIA. Journalists, civil rights activists and members of the opposition were threatened and in some cases imprisoned without charge.

The NIA Abdoulie Sey, editor-in-chief of The Independent, is said to have been arrested in 2003 and the broadcaster Citizen FM to have been shut down by the authorities in February 1998 after broadcasting a report on suspicion of corruption against a senior NIA official.

State Intelligence Services

With the change of government in 2017, in which Yahya Jammeh lost the majority in the December 2016 presidential elections , the new President Adama Barrow announced in a press release on February 1, 2017 that the agency would be renamed State Intelligence Services. At the same time he announced reforms so that the SIS should only deal with the recording and analysis in order to protect the Gambia from external and internal threats. Detention that is not in conformity with the constitution is prohibited. Furthermore, vehicles that do not have an official license plate are no longer allowed to move on Gambia's roads.

As general manager, Barrow put Musa Dibba , who succeeds Yankuba Badjie . As of February 13, 2017, Ousman Sowe was appointed as the new General Manager.
