Benedict Jammeh

Benedict "Ben" Jammeh (* 1957 in Kanilai ; † April 20, 2018 in Banjul ) was a teacher, police officer and civil servant in the West African state of Gambia . From August 2008 to August 2009 he was Director General of the Gambian Intelligence Agency , the National Intelligence Agency (NIA).

Life

Described as a civil servant of high standing in 2010, Jammeh holds two degrees - a BA in History and LLB Honors. He went to St. Anthony Primary School in Kanilai, then to St. Edward Secondary School and then to St. Augustine's High School, which he graduated in 1976.

He joined the defunct Field Force in 1980 , where he served until 1981 (according to another source in late 1982), shortly after the failed coup attempt . Then he left the army and entered the teaching service. He taught at St. George's for a year and later enrolled at Gambia College where he received his PTC. After graduation, he was transferred to Kerewan Samba Sirrah as deputy headmaster. There he taught for three years and returned to Gambia College for his HTC with a major in geography and a minor in biology. After leaving his HTC, he went to Gambia High School , where he worked as a geography teacher. There he taught history, geography and biblical knowledge from 1990 to 2000. He received his first degree in history from Saint Mary's University Extension Program in the UK in 1998 , where Jammeh enrolled there in 1995. In 2000, he gave up teaching to go to the police. In 2001 he was admitted to study law at the University of London , from which he graduated in 2007 with LLB Honors.

In April 2007 he was appointed Inspector General of Police (IGP), replacing Musa Mboob . On June 16, 2008, he was removed from the police force and briefly reassigned to the judiciary as senior magistrate . Essa Badjie was his successor as IGP.

With effect from June 28, 2008, he was appointed Director General of the NIA. He succeeded Major Malamin Jarjue , who was reportedly reassigned to the Army, where he served as Deputy Director and later as Director General of Military Intelligence prior to his transfer to the NIA. He worked there until August 12, 2008, when he was replaced by Major Modou Lamin Badjie .

Jammeh then worked for the National Training Authority (NTA) as a legal advisor and part-time lecturer in business law at the Gambia Technical Training Institute (GTTI).

In April 2010 he was appointed Executive Director of the National Drug Enforcement Agency (NDEA).

In May 2013, Jammeh was tried in the Banjul Supreme Court along with Abdoulie Ceesay , former spokesman for the NDEA, Yusupha Jatta , the agency's former administrative director, and Foday Barry , the agency's former director of investigation and intelligence . They were initially charged on a 90-count charge, which includes white-collar crime, abuse of office, theft, false information, misrepresentation, mispublication, forgery of evidence and other charges.

After spending four years in exile in Senegal, he returned to Gambia under the new Adama Barrow government . In April 2018, Jammeh died at the age of 61 and was buried in his hometown of Kanilai .
