Citizen FM

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Citizen FM (also Citizen Radio ) was a commercially operated radio broadcaster in the West African state of Gambia .

The station was founded in 1996 by Baboucarr Gaye and broadcast messages in different languages such as Mandinka and Wolof , which are common in Gambia and Senegal .

In February 1998, the station was shut down by the authorities after broadcasting a report of suspected corruption against a senior secret service official , the National Intelligence Agency (NIA), and his human rights abuses . The authorities justified the closure by saying that Citizen FM engages in "irresponsible journalism" and that the broadcaster failed to renew its license. The day before, two employees, Baboucarr Gaye and Ebrima Sillah, were arrested and interrogated by the NIA. At the end of August, a court ruled that the station should be closed.

An appeal to the higher court was delayed until October 2000. Then the Citizen FM could go back on the air. In 2001 the radio station's license was withdrawn again.
