Momodou Hydara

Momodou Lamin Hydara (December 1938 - October 3, 2009 ) is a former Gambian director general of the National Intelligence Agency (NIA).

Life

Hydara is a former officer with the National Intelligence Agency (NIA). He succeeded Harry Sambou as acting general manager in November 2006 , previously he was his deputy. Shortly afterwards he was released in late November 2006, succeeded by Pa Jallow . He played a leading role in the investigation into the foiled coup in March 2006 by Ndure Cham . Some of the officers charged with high treason had testified before a court-martial, where they made horrific statements during interrogation about Hydara's alleged surveillance of torture sessions at the NIA. One of these officers was former Army Captain Pierre John Mendy, the former commandant of the Fajara barracks.

Hydara was re-admitted to the NIA in 2008, this time as Deputy Director General. He later came into conflict with Jammeh and went into exile in the United States. The state of Alaska was his new home.

In mid-2018, Hydara came into the focus of investigations by US authorities into torture. It concerns alleged torture of prisoners of the NIA during the rule of dictator Jammeh .

Hydara was married to Fatou Njie, the former protocol officer for First Lady Zeinab Souma Jammeh . But the couple had since divorced. Hydara's uncle, Momodou Lamin Sedat Jobe , is Gambia's ambassador to France. Hydara's mother is a sister of Jobe.
