Zineb Jammeh

Zineb Jammeh (born October 5, 1977 in Rabat , born as Zineb Soumah) is the wife of the former President Yahya Jammeh . She is the former first lady of the West African state of Gambia .

Life

Jammeh was born as the daughter of the Guinean ambassador Ibrahima Soumah († 2002) and a Moroccan mother, Rhimou el Hassady Soumah (1948-2011). Soumah was accredited to Morocco .

education

Zineb Jammeh attended primary school in Rabat from 1984 to 1988. She also attended secondary school in Rabat from 1992 to 1995. In the United States, she attended an English course from July to September 1995. At the School for International Management and Commerce ( French Ecole Superieure de Gestion Internationale et de Commerce (EGICO-SUP) ), which she attended from 1995 to 1997, she obtained a diploma in International Systems and Management ( English International Systems and Management ).

First lady

In December 1998 she married (as Zainab Yaya Suma of Rabat ) according to Muslim tradition, the Gambian President Yahya Jammeh in Morocco. The marriage resulted in two children, a daughter (* 2000) and a son (* 2007). For Yahya Jammeh this is the second marriage after his first marriage to Tuti Faal Jammeh , from whom he divorced after marrying Zineb Jammeh. Yahya Jammeh married another woman, Alima Sallah, in October 2010. Zineb Jammeh remained First Lady, since according to the protocol the title 'First Lady' is only given once. In November 2010 she accompanied her husband to Saudi Arabia on the pilgrimage ( Hādj ).

She was President of the Foundation For Women Socio-Economic Advancement (FOWSEA), a subsidiary of the Jammeh Foundation for Peace (JFP). This foundation, of which she was also president, focused on humanitarian aid for women and children, in particular on the health sector, education, agriculture and trade. Zineb Jammeh was the patron of the “ Save-a-Baby ” campaign and patron of the Gambian chapter of the Forum for African Women Educationalists (FAWEGAM). As a former first lady, she was a member of the African First Ladies Peace Mission . In 2006, she hosted the General Assembly of the Organization of African First Ladies Against AIDS (OAFLAA) to coincide with the summit African Union ( English AU Summit ) in Banjul took place.

In addition, she took on numerous official appearances in the field of health care, women's politics and education.

On World Children's Day ( English International Children's Day of Broadcasting ) in 2006 Jammeh led with her daughter Mariam in Gambia Radio & Television Service (MRTS) through the program of the transmitter. For this, the MRTS 2007 received the regional award for West and Central Africa ( english International Children's Day of Broadcasting (ICDB) regional award ) of the United Nations (Children's Fund UNICEF ), which praised the participation Jammeh was mentioned.

exile

After her husband had lost the presidential election in 2016 to Adama Barrow and resigned the government office only under massive international pressure, she flew with her husband to Equatorial Guinea on January 21, 2017 , where she and her husband were led by the authoritarian ruling leader Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo were recorded.

In September 2019, the results of the Janneh Commission , a committee of inquiry set up by the Barrow government to investigate Jammeh's financial activities, were published. Accordingly, she has appropriated public funds amounting to 3.3 million Dalasi and 2 million US dollars through her foundation .
