Jammeh Foundation for Peace

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Jammeh Foundation for Peace (JFP) was - by its own account - an independent, apolitical, non-profit organization based in Gambia, West Africa. The foundation was established by Gambia's then President Yahya Jammeh in 1999.

mission

The foundation's mission is to achieve substantial and sustainable improvements in the quality of life for the people of Gambia. To achieve this, the foundation offers programs in:

  • education
  • health
  • Agriculture
  • Women's issues
  • Development of youth

history

The foundation was established by the Gambian President Alhaji Yahya Jammeh and the First Lady of Gambia, Zineb Yahya Jammeh . The foundation took place in May 1999. The First Lady Jammeh was the president of the foundation. The Gambian Vice-President Isatou Njie Saidy was the Chair of the Board . Jammeh's brother Ansumana Jammeh was Executive Director from 2006 to 2008 . He was succeeded by Nancy Njie .

On September 10, 2001, the foundation was registered as a charity.

In May 2011, the national Gambia Police Force (GPF) made an annual donation to the foundation. The GPF donated 31 bags of products from the police farm, including 7 bags of peanuts, 7 bags of Coos, 11 bags of corn and 6 bags of rice at a ceremony at Banjul Police Headquarters .

In September 2011, the Saudi Arabian princess Ameera bint Aidan bin Nayef Al-Taweel visited Gambia and toured the foundation. The foundation donated $ 500,000 to build a health diagnostic center. During her tour, Princess Ameera pledged a donation of $ 100,000 to the foundation.

criticism

After Jammeh lost the presidency, Reuters released a report on February 24, 2017 that said funds from the Jammeh Foundation for Peace went to Jammeh himself, not to the foundation's projects.

In September 2019, the results of the Janneh Commission , which had been installed by Jammeh's successor, President Adama Barrow , to investigate Jammeh's financial activities were published. Accordingly, the foundation neither had a budget plan nor had the finances been checked. Even the board members hardly had any information about the foundation's activities.

According to the Janneh Commission, a total of almost 9.5 million US dollars was spent for purposes other than those intended. These include a transfer from the Taiwanese Embassy worth two million dollars in January 2011, which was withdrawn in cash on the same day and handed over to Jammeh. At the time of Jammeh's departure from Gambia after the lost presidential elections in Gambia at the end of 2016 , the account was overdrawn by almost 200,000 US dollars.

The committee of inquiry came to the conclusion that the Jammeh Foundation had served as a cover for personal enrichment.
