Nicholas James Samra (born August 15, 1944 in Paterson , New Jersey, USA) has been Melkite Bishop of the Newton Eparchy ( USA ) since August 2011 .

Life

Samra was born in Paterson, New Jersey, to George H. Samra and Elizabeth Balady Samra . His father and grandparents were immigrants from Aleppo , Syria .

Samra studied at Saint Anselm College ( Manchester (New Hampshire) ) and at Saint John's Seminary in Boston . He was ordained a priest on May 10, 1970 and led congregations of the Melkite Eparchy Newton in Los Angeles , Chicago and New Jersey .

On April 21, 1989 Pope John Paul II named Samra auxiliary bishop in the Newton eparchy and titular bishop of Gerasa . Archbishop Joseph Elias Tawil donated him episcopal ordination on July 6 of the same year . Co- consecrators were the Archbishop of Saint-Sauveur de Montréal , Michel Hakim BS , and the Bishop of Nuestra Señora del Paraíso en Mexico , Boutros Raï BA .

Samra worked as auxiliary bishop and protosyncellus until he resigned on January 11, 2005 to pursue academic work.

Samra has published writings on ecumenism , Christian leadership, and church history , including a history of the Melkite Church and a book on Archbishop Joseph Tawil. He was the chairman of the Byzantine Dioceses Group in the United States Bishops' Conference .

In June 2011, the Synod of the Melkite Greek Catholic Church elected him Bishop of Newton. Pope Benedict XVI confirmed the election on June 15, 2011. The inauguration took place on August 23 of the same year.

From January 16, 2015 to December 20, 2019, he was also Apostolic Administrator of the Eparchie Nuestra Señora del Paraíso en México .
