history
The emigration of Melkite Christians from the Middle East to Mexico began between around 1875 and 1895. An increasing number of emigrants followed after the two world wars . The vast majority came from southern Lebanon and some from Syria . The first joint services in the Byzantine rite were celebrated in 1927. The pastoral care was initially taken over by the Salvatorians . The first religious priest of the Mission Society of St. Paul , a Melkite religious community who stayed in Mexico at the request of his relatives, was Father Sleiman Khoury SMSP , who was later ordained Archimandrite . He was the first pastor of a parish for the Melkite Greek Catholic Church in Mexico. The Lebanese ambassador to Mexico Joseph Abu Khater asked the Mexican government for permission to build a church in Mexico City, which is now a cathedral and the seat of the Exarch of Mexico.
The eparchy was finally established on February 27, 1988 by Pope John Paul II with the Apostolic Constitution Apostolorum Principis .
