Basilians from Aleppo

The Basilians of Aleppo ( Latin Ordo Basilianus Aleppensis Melkitarum , abbreviation : BA, also known as Aleppine Basilians ) are a male order of the Melkite Greek Catholic Church . The order is involved in the Byzantine rite and has its headquarters in Jounieh , Lebanon .

history

The order comes from the traditional community of the Basilians who, according to St. Basil the Great named. They live and work according to the rules , writings and sermons that refer to Basil the Great and have been handed down. The religious community was founded in 1697 in Dhour El Shwayr in Lebanon by monks from Aleppo . In 1710 the order received its papal approbation from Pope Clement XI. In 1740 the female Basilians of Aleppo was founded. Archimandrite Seraphim Antoun Kassabji is the superior general of the order .

The order provided several outstanding bishops within the Melkite Greek Catholic Church . Currently there are a cardinal and three bishops, one of whom is retired . As of 2011, the religious community has 24 priests , 34 monks and looks after 12 parishes .
