from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Basilian of the Most Holy Redeemer ( Latin Ordo Basilianus Sanctissimi Salvatoris Melkitarum , abbreviation : BS) are a religious community of the Basilians in the Melkite Greek Catholic Church . According to the regulations of the Roman Catholic Church , the priestly and monastic community is an institute of consecrated life . They live and work in the Byzantine rite and have their roots in Lebanon .

history

The religious community was founded in 1683 by Bishop Euthymios Saifi . As Bishop of the Archeparchy of Sidon , he gathered several Basilians around him and gave them a pastoral and missionary mandate. The first permanent hostel for the monks was built in the small village of Joun , near Sidon : In 1701, Bishop Saifi bought a farm there and had it converted into a monastery . In 1711 the first Basilian monastery was inaugurated by the Most Holy Redeemer. In 1737 the Basilian feminine branch was founded by the Most Holy Redeemer . The male religious community only received papal approbation in 1937 from Pope Pius XI. (1922-1939). The Basilians of the Most Holy Redeemer spread mainly in Lebanon and had their local focuses in Damascus and southern Lebanon . The only monastery outside of Lebanon was founded as Basil's Monastery in Methuen, Massachusetts in 1953 .

The educational center of the Basilians of the Most Holy Redeemer is located in Sion, in 1828 the monks built a college and the order's own seminary .

Archimandrite Sleiman Abou Zeid has been leading the religious community as superior general since 2001, with 88 priests and 95 monks in 12 monasteries. The main focus of work is pastoral service in the parishes , social services, ecumenical work and dialogue between the various religious communities in Lebanon.

celibacy

In the first half of the 19th century, the religious community lost its importance. The Melkite Patriarch of Antioch Maximus III. Mazloum (1833–1855) had also introduced celibacy for the diocesan priests . As a result of the lack of respect and disregard for the vow of poverty , opposition to other Basilian orders arose. Only the reforms in the 20th century solved these problems.

Melkite Greek Catholic Bishops

Similar to the Basilians of Aleppo , the Basilians of the Holy Savior make up a significant number of bishops and patriarchs within the Melkite Greek Catholic Church. The Order currently has a patriarch, two archbishops ( Issam John Darwich BS and Elie Bechara Haddad BS) and a bishop ( Ibrahim Michael Ibrahim BS).
