On the situation in the Middle East

Archbishop Haddad was a participant in the Special Assembly of the Synod of Bishops on the Middle East in Rome and took a clear position on the situation of Christians in Lebanon.

“At the Middle East Synod in the Vatican, he spoke of an increased emigration of Christians from the country, as the speech widespread on Thursday shows. The sale of Christian property is currently developing into a "dangerous phenomenon," said Haddad. This could become a threat to the Christian presence in Lebanon, up to and including its disappearance. Haddad called on the Eastern churches associated with Rome to show mutual solidarity in order to avert this danger. In addition, the archbishop called for the church to change its attitude towards Islam, which clearly distinguishes between Islam in principle and some fundamentalist currents. Haddad continued to advocate a more sustainable form of support for the oriental churches. This must shed the character of an aid program and become a development concept in order to bind the Christians to their traditional places and to create jobs there. "
