history
The historical and Christian origin of Sidon goes back to the New Testament , in the Gospel according to Matthew ( Mt 15 : 21-28 EU ) it is told: "From there Jesus withdrew into the area of Tire and Sidon" and in the Gospel according to Mark ( Mk 7.31 EU ) states. "Jesus left the region of Tire and came through Sidon to the sea of Galilee in the middle of the area of the Decapolis" the arrest and imprisonment About the Paul is in the book of Acts ( Acts 27.3 EU ) reports: "The next day we entered Sidon, and Julius, who treated Paul benevolently, allowed him to go to his friends and be cared for."
Only from the year 770 were records found again about the life of the community of Sidon. With the conquest of the last crusader bastion Akko by the Mamelukes in 1291, the Christian community in Sidon was largely lost. The reconstruction of the Christian communities in and around Sidon only began again around 1604 with the election of Ignatius Houtiyeh as bishop of Tire and Sidon.
During the mission work since the end of the 16th century converted single priest of the Orthodox Melkites to the Latin rite . Euthymus II Karmé († 1635), who converted to the Catholic faith, was ordained the first Melkite bishop in 1634. The eparchy of Tire and Sidon were established in 1683, in 1752 the division into Tire and Sidon was made, later Sidon was subordinated to the Archdiocese of Tire as a suffragan diocese.
On November 18, 1964, the Eparchy Sidon was by Pope Paul VI. raised to an arch parish. The Diocese of Sidon looks after around 18,500 Christians of the Melkite Greek Catholic Church. There are 42 churches and 36 schools in the diocese, and the parishes are looked after by 50 priests. The Basilians have 4 convents in the Diocese of Sidon , including 28 religious priests , 65 scholastics and novices and 9 lay brothers .
