Basile Khoury

Basile Khoury BS (born August 15, 1900 in Borj-Safita , today Syria , † April 22, 1985 ) was the first Archbishop of Sidon of the Melkite Greek Catholic Church in Lebanon .

Life

On May 2, 1928, Basile Khoury was ordained as a religious priest of the Melkite Basilians from the Most Holy Redeemer ( order abbreviation : BS). He was appointed bishop of the newly established Sidon eparchy on March 15, 1947. The episcopal ordination donated to him on March 25, 1947 Kyrillos IX. Moghabghab , the Melkite Greek Catholic Patriarch of Antioch ; Co- consecrators were Cyrille Riza (Rizq), Syrian Catholic auxiliary bishop in Damascus , and Pierre Kamel Medawar SMSP , auxiliary bishop in the Melkite Patriarchate of Antioch . At the beginning of the 1960s, during his tenure and under his patronage, a hexagonal chapel was built in the Lebanese pilgrimage site of Maghduscha , the 28 meter high spire of which is adorned with a statue ofOur Lady of Mantara ”. He was a council father during the first and second session of the Second Vatican Council (1962–1965).

On November 18, 1964, the Eparchy Sidon was by Pope Paul VI. elevated to the archparchy and appointed Khoury archbishop of Sidon. On July 30, 1965, he was co-consecrator of Archbishop Georges Haddad . On reaching the age limit, he was with 77 years on August 25, 1977, concurrent appointment as titular Archbishop of Myra dei Greco-Melkiti emeritus . His successor was Archbishop Michel Hakim BS.
