"The hero of Tire"
On June 7, 1982, the city of Tire was threatened by an Israeli tank attack . Tire was considered a stronghold of the PLO resistance. Archbishop Georges Haddad opposed the Israeli military column in a courageous solo effort and urged negotiations. He managed to delay the attack so that no civilians were killed or injured in the fighting. And so the media reported:
“A man in a white robe became visible, Metropolitan Georges Haddad. The crowd, mostly Muslims, formed a line and called out to the confused Christian shepherd: 'Long live our father, our archbishop.' He spoke a second time to an Israeli colonel. Then Israeli loudspeaker vans announced: 'You can all go home, for the sake of your metropolitan.' Georges Haddad returned to his undamaged archdiocese on the shoulders of his fellow citizens. In the courtyard, in front of fragments of Phoenician columns, he fell on his knees and prayed. Christians and Muslims joined in. "
