The Grümmi-Arena is a football stadium in the city of Neumünster , Schleswig-Holstein . It is the home of VfR Neumünster , who were promoted to the North Regional Football League in the 2012/13 season . Until 2011, the venue was called VfR-Stadion on Geerdtsstraße (short: VfR-Stadion ).
history
The stadium of VfR Neumünster was built in 1927. It is close to the city's zoo and airfield . Initially it offered space for around 18,000 spectators, today the stadium has a capacity of 4999. Structurally, there are 6000 spaces available in order to save costs during the renovation and not to fall under the regulation on places of assembly , the association has decided to close the north curve and not want to let in more than 4999 people. The stadium has two separate entrance areas: the one for the home fans is behind the east straight, the one for the guests on the south curve. All standing places except for the closed north curve are currently being retrofitted with rubber mats and breakwaters anchored in the ground. Several soccer fields of various sizes are laid out around the stadium.
From 1955 VfR played in the Oberliga Nord , the top division of German football at the time, and clubs such as Hamburger SV , Werder Bremen , Eintracht Braunschweig and Hannover 96 were regular guests in the stadium during this time.
In February 2011, the entrepreneur Gerd Grümmer, who runs four Edeka branches in Neumünster, secured the naming rights to the VfR Stadium, which is retrospectively called the Grümmi-Arena from January 1, 2011 .
