Günter Mess (born November 26, 1931 ) is a former German football player who played for VfR Neumünster in the Oberliga Nord and scored 43 goals in 216 first division games. Due to his outstanding performance, he is considered one of the best players in the history of the VfR Neumünster club.

Career as a player

City inspector Mess was one of the most important strikers of the team during the Oberliga time of VfR Neumünster and ensured through his goals that the Neumünster players consistently played in the top division between 1955 and 1963. The half-right striker and temporary team captain completed 216 games for VfR in the major league, making him the club's record player. In the first regional league season in 1963/64, Mess also completed another game and was part of the NFV selection four times for which he was able to score a goal.

Mess scored one of the most important goals of his career in the promotion game against VfV Hildesheim. In the Hoheluft stadium , in which the Neumünsteraner were able to beat the competitor SC Victoria Hamburg in the promotion round a few weeks earlier , Mess scored the 1-0. The goal, which fell after just a few minutes in front of 10,000 spectators, initiated the 2-0 victory over Hildesheim, which sealed the first-time promotion to the first-class Oberliga Nord.

Other important goals of his career were the goals against Hamburger SV (2-1 for Neumünster) in the 1958/59 season, as well as the 2-0 in the last season of the Oberliga over the later Bundesliga club Eintracht Braunschweig , which was also the last goal his career was. The victory over Eintracht at the end of the season helped VfR to fourth place and thus to qualify for the Intertoto Cup .

Mess was related by marriage to the VfR legend Jonni Schmuck, with whom he played well for a long time. The duo jewelry / mess scored 70 goals in the Oberliga Nord and also provided numerous templates for further goals. Behind Siegfried Agurew, Mess was the second best goalscorer for VfR Neumünster in the Oberliga Nord. In a serious accident involving the team bus of the VfR Neumünster league team on March 12, 1962, Mess, unlike many of his teammates, survived unharmed and got away with the shock.

Career as a coach

After the end of his career, Mess was temporarily also the coach of VfR Neumünster. So he took over VfR, which had meanwhile crashed into the regional league, in the 1966 season and, as the only coach of the VfR for a long time, led the Neumünster team to the promotion round to the second-rate Regionalliga Nord. In front of 4,000 spectators, however, the purple-whites lost 5-1 to Sperber Hamburg and had to give up hopes of promotion to the regional league. In addition, he coached the VfR at least until the 1968/69 season.

Only the "proven" missions in the time of the Oberliga Nord and the Regionalliga Nord are listed. 218 (216 in the Oberliga Nord, 1 in the Regionalliga Nord, and 1 in the promotion round to Oberliga Nord) is the minimum number of bets. According to a report from the Hamburger Abendblatt, Mess had already completed over 500 missions by 1962 (due to his young age at that time, it can be assumed that games in youth teams were also included) for the Neumünster team.
