Cornhole

Cornhole , also known as bean bag or blind hole , is a recreational game in which several players take turns throwing small sacks ( bean bags ) filled with corn onto a raised platform with a hole. If a bag remains on the platform, one point is scored; if a bag falls into the hole, three points are scored. The game is especially popular in the United States .

General rules of the game

Double
A game is held with four players who each form teams of two. They are distributed to the left and right in the so-called pitcher's box , which is located next to the opponent's cornhole platform. Each player now throws four bags onto the opposite cornhole platform. The players have twenty seconds to throw. The two cornhole platforms are 10 meters (33 ft.) Apart from the hole.

The structure of a typical double game.

Singles
A singles game is held with only two players playing against each other. The other rules from the double are adopted.

Team
4 singles and 2 doubles are played.

Points and Procedure In
general, a sack that remains on the cornhole platform after the throw without touching the ground counts for one point, and a sack that falls into the cornhole hole counts for three points. However, points can also be lost if a player pushes a bag with another bag off the platform. In addition, a bag that is on the platform can be pushed into the cornhole with the help of another bag. Bags lying on the platform but touching the floor are invalid and will be removed from the platform immediately. The difference between the points is counted. The first player to score 21 points wins the set. A game consists of three sets.

The board

In the American version, the boards have the dimensions: 120 cm × 60 cm (47.5 × 23.5 inches). The German Cornhole Association DeCoV plays on the small format 90 × 60 cm.

history

It is unknown where the real origin of the game lies, although there are conjectures and stories about the origin of the cornhole. One guess is that the game was first played in Germany in the 14th century and was rediscovered in Ohio in the last century . There are eyewitnesses who say that Native Americans (mostly the Blackhawk tribe ) played a very similar game near Illinois . The game won in the 1990s considerable popularity in Athens , Ohio, and East Lansing , Michigan , to the universities Ohio University and Michigan State University . Since then, it has established itself as an integral part of the tailgating (from English tailgate, 'tailgate'), a social event in the run-up to numerous sporting events, where people grill and drink together in the event parking lot .

In Germany, the game was presented in the program Schlag den Raab from December 2011 as part of the competition and was thus known to a wider audience for the first time. The German Cornhole Association hosted the first official German championship on June 16 and 17, 2012 at the Cornhole in Hanover.
