Schlag den Raab ( SdR for short ) is a German game show that was produced by Raab TV from 2006 to 2015 and ran for the first time on September 23, 2006 on ProSieben . After Stefan Raab announced his retirement from the TV business in June 2015, the last program was broadcast on December 19 of the same year.
The show was broadcast live and took place in the Brainpool Studios in Cologne-Mülheim . One candidate per broadcast competed in various disciplines or games against the entertainer Stefan Raab. The candidate could win at least 500,000 euros, provided he had defeated Raab in a maximum of 16 games. After every competition won by Raab, the sum increased by a further 500,000 euros. In the last broadcast the rules were changed; Raab competed against a total of 15 different candidates from the audience.
From September 30, 2017, the new edition of the show ran for eight issues under the title Schlag den Henssler with Steffen Henssler as host.
Course of the show and rules
The live broadcasts began with the introduction of five candidates from which Raab's opponents were selected. The opponents then competed against each other in a maximum of sixteen games until a winner was determined. In the end, the candidate won the prize money or the jackpot rose by half a million euros. There was also a maximum of four musical acts in each show.
Presentation of the candidates and selection of the opponent
Of the viewers, who could register using a form on the Internet, around 50 to 70 applicants were invited to a casting in Frechen for each show . There they had to answer knowledge questions correctly, prove their fitness in circuit training and convincingly introduce themselves in 30 seconds. Five candidates were selected for the show from among the best participants.
At the beginning of the show, the five candidates were briefly introduced with a video clip that was filmed beforehand. In the video, the candidate could be seen in his job, in sports and in his private sphere; Family members or friends highlighted the candidate's strengths. The television viewers then decided which of the candidates would play against Raab by televoting for a fee . From the 45th episode, each video clip only lasted one minute instead of the previous three; In addition, a time limit of three minutes was introduced for televoting in this issue in order to shorten the time until the first game.
Games
Raab and his opponent dueled each other in various games from areas such as sport , knowledge , skill , tactics or luck . Fringe sports or games of skill, which were still unknown in Germany, were often used. The “embarrassing or cashing” quiz, which is totally known from TV, as well as a few other games appeared in several editions, while other games were only used once.
Some games were played outside in front of the studio. These were mostly games that required complex structures (ski jump, tower), large playing fields (soccer, ice hockey), water basins, racing, off-road and competition tracks for cars, excavators and other exotic vehicles. In the first few years, games also took place in Cologne's urban area, for example in the Dünnwald forest pool, at the Deutzer Hafen , in the Cologne bicycle stadium or in the Lentpark .
Scoring system
A total of up to 15 games were normally planned. The ascending number of the game corresponded to the number of points to be won in the respective game. The respective winner received one point in the first game, two points in the second game, etc. The aim was to achieve more than half of the total of 120 points, i.e. at least 61 points. If the candidate and Raab each had exactly 60 points after 15 games, there was a play-off with the so-called "jump-off". This happened twice.
If a candidate won the first ten games, the 55 points received were not enough for the overall victory, the required number of 61 points was only possible with the eleventh game at the earliest.
Prize amount
In the first edition, 500,000 euros could be won. If Raab won, the jackpot for the next show increased by 500,000 euros. If a candidate won the jackpot, the next edition would again play for 500,000 euros. The largest jackpot in the amount of 3.5 million euros was played in the 38th edition.
Moderators, commentators and referees
Issues 1 to 28 of Schlag den Raab moderated Matthias Opdenhövel . Then Steven Gätjen took over the moderation until the last show.
Elton appeared in almost every episode as he acted as the quiz master on "Embarrassing or Cashing" . He always wore a red suit. In the broadcast on April 5, 2008, the questions were read out by Matthias Opdenhövel because Elton was unable to attend.
In the early days of the program, the commentators changed: the first four issues were commented on by Tobias Drews , the fifth by Frank Buschmann and the sixth by Hansi Küpper . Since the seventh broadcast, Buschmann has been a permanent commentator on most of the competitions. In some games, his voice could only be heard by the TV viewer so as not to influence the opponents in the studio. Buschmann was unable to attend issue 49, which was postponed at short notice and was replaced by Ron Ringguth .
In sporting competitions, referees from the respective sport or a related discipline were used. The moderator directed the other games. In the background, the notary Richard Böhr (previously Stefan Klein) monitored the correct course of the duel; he could intervene if necessary, but this rarely happened in practice.
Overview of the shows
Charisma
Schlag den Raab was Saturdays for prime time from 20:15 pm live on ProSieben aired. Repetitions were shown on the following Sunday morning at ProSieben and in the early evening at ProSieben Fun and ProSieben Maxx . In addition, all issues can be seen on the Myspass.de website as video-on-demand . Since the seventh edition on November 3, 2007, the program has been broadcast in 16: 9 format.
A total of 55 issues were broadcast. Since a show could consist of eleven to 15 games and a final jump-off , the length of the programs was flexible. The shortest issue was the premiere broadcast, which ended at 12:01 a.m. The show, which was broadcast on November 15, 2014 after a postponement, only ended at 2:26 a.m., making it the longest run.
Twice the broadcast could not take place on the scheduled date. The 49th edition, which was actually scheduled for November 1, 2014, was canceled at short notice the evening before because Raab was unable to compete due to a flu-like infection . For the first time in his work at ProSieben , he had to cancel a show. This issue was made up for two weeks later. The 52nd edition, scheduled for March 28, 2015, was also canceled, according to ProSieben for "technical production reasons". The show took place around a month later on April 25th.
Results
Raab won 38 duels (70%) in 54 broadcasts, while his opponents were able to prevail in 16 editions. Twice the decision was made in the jump-off, once a substitute game followed after the 15th game because the two opponents could not solve the task. Deaon Maxwell prevailed on January 15, 2011 after twelve games with 61:17 points and thus achieved the clearest victory of a candidate. Raab, on the other hand, won the show three times after the minimum required number of eleven games, in two cases his opponent did not win any points. Since various candidates competed against Raab in the 55th program, this is not included in the statistics.
Raab suffered the first defeat in the third broadcast against Matthias Göbel. He had the longest successful streak from December 2011 to November 2012 with six wins in a row. That is why the 38th edition of the record jackpot in the amount of 3.5 million euros was played, which represented the world's highest prize money in a game show and went to Bernd Stadelmann. Raab suffered two defeats in a row four times (in editions 5/6, 17/18, 26/27 and 30/31).
Except for Jan May (then 44 years old) in the twelfth edition, all candidates were younger than Raab (born October 20, 1966), who played a total of 44 men and 10 women. Maria Kleinebrahm was the only woman who managed to beat Raab in the 52nd edition on April 25, 2015.

Latest edition
The last broadcast of Schlag den Raab on December 19, 2015 was carried out with different rules. Instead of a selection round between five candidates, Gätjen chose a candidate from the audience before each game. Since Raab was not beaten in the previous editions, the jackpot stood at 1.5 million euros. These were now divided into the 15 games, so that each candidate could win 100,000 euros with a win against Raab. In the event of a defeat, these 100,000 euros went into the remaining jackpot, for which the respective winning candidates were played at the end of the broadcast. Candidate Hendrik Abel prevailed against the other five candidates in the “Klackern” playoff and won a total of 1 million euros (100,000 euros from the single game won and 900,000 euros from the jackpot).
Furthermore, the Heavytones were present, who played the theme tune live on the show. At the end of the program, Raab interpreted Rudolph Run together with the band One Moment in Time and Run .

Odds
The program with the highest ratings was the 24th edition, both for the total audience from 3 years of age (4 million viewers) and the target group between 14 and 49 years of age (2.83 million viewers). The 17th edition had the highest market share in both audience groups with 20.8 percent (viewers aged 3 and over) and 34.9 percent (viewers between 14 and 49).
The 4th edition was the weakest show in three respects: It had the fewest viewers aged three and over (2.25 million), the smallest overall market share (9.5 percent) and the lowest market share in the advertising-relevant target group (17.8 percent ). Only the number of viewers in this target group (1.64 million) was undercut in the 42nd edition with 1.61 million viewers.

Special occurrences
- In the first edition there were several technical difficulties: At first the timing did not work temporarily in the fifth game, then the buzzers did not work in the sixth game. When the notary was supposed to be called in, a telephone connection was only established at the second attempt. In the eleventh game there was a graphic error in the “card duel”, which briefly questioned the decision of the game, and in the decisive thirteenth game the stopwatch was not running.
- In the second edition, the seventh game “Memorize”, in which the candidates had to memorize several images, was subsequently canceled; Raab won this game. According to the notary, there were several inconsistencies in the image overlays when the candidates had to reproduce the imprinted images. There was a substitute game (can throwing) with the same value.
- In the fifth edition, Raab and the candidate in the twelfth game (“Where is what?”) With their tips were exactly the same distance from the desired destination to the kilometer. The task remained without evaluation.
- In the eleventh edition on May 31, 2008, Raab angrily hit the console with his fist, which broke the pane on his screen and injured himself. Since the desk was still functional despite the damage and the injury was not serious, the broadcast could be continued.
- In the 13th edition on November 1st, 2008, the third game "Laufrad" was repeated because the counting mechanism did not work properly during Raab's attempt and indicated more laps. After the notary had initially not raised any objection, according to the then moderator Matthias Opdenhövel, viewers called and pointed out the malfunction. Raab won the repeat, so the score remained unchanged.
- In issue 16 on April 18, 2009 Raab and his opponent Oku were supposed to blow up three balloons as quickly as possible in game 1. The game was interrupted after only a few seconds because the backflow valve of the first balloon on Raab's side did not keep the air in the balloon. As a test, he briefly inflated the other balloons, but their valves worked. Moderator Matthias Opdenhövel then decided to complete the game with only two balloons. In fairness, before the game resumed, Oku was allowed to inflate his remaining balloons as much as Raab had done with his. Oku won the game and the first point overall.
- In the following 17th show on May 23, 2009, Raab gave his opponent Nino in the eleventh game "Who is lying?" two points and ultimately victory, when he seemed to interpret the rules of the game exactly the opposite on both occasions and believed that he had to buzz on a true answer instead of a lie.
- On April 10, 2010, the biggest incident in the history of the show occurred: In the 22nd edition, Stefan Raab crashed on a mountain bike during the seventh game of the show . He suffered a concussion with memory loss and broke his cheekbone and the wall of the maxillary sinus . His opponent Hans Martin had also fallen, but remained uninjured. Immediately after the fall, Raab lost consciousness for several seconds . Nevertheless, he continued the competition after a short break, but did not play the tenth game ( high jump ) due to medical concerns on the part of the doctors. Shortly after the fall, he tried to complete more runs of the bike race, but fell again. In the course of the evening he could not remember his new attempts. The injuries on his face could be seen for a long time to the months after the show.
- On December 18, 2010, Stefan Raab and his opponent were only allowed to play all games with their left hand, as Raab broke his right wrist in a skiing accident a few days before the show. The show was unceremoniously renamed Schlag den Raab - with links . If the candidate had been left-handed , he would have had to play the games with his weak hand as well.
- In the 29th edition of June 4, 2011, the eleventh game was interrupted for several minutes after Stefan Raab had made a deep cut on his right middle finger, which was sewn with a stitch during a commercial break. A few minutes earlier, candidate Tobias had injured his hand, but was able to continue the game with a tape bandage .
- In the broadcast on September 17, 2011, the 14th game (“Country Outlines”) showed the outline of Sudan within the limits valid until July 8, 2011. At the time of the broadcast, South Sudan had already declared itself independent. This new founding of the state and the admission of South Sudan to the United Nations were already queried in the quiz “Embarrassing or cashing in” in the program. The country outline was not recognized by any player.
- In the 34th edition of April 14, 2012, Raab tore an inner ligament on his right knee during the third game ( javelin throw ). He could not play the game to the end, but despite the abandonment, he won because he had already presented a distance sufficient for victory. The following game (cross pursuit) Raab could not deny; the points went to the candidate without a fight.
- In the 47th edition of May 3, 2014, the winner was proclaimed too early in the decisive 13th game (“pulling strings”). The final fireworks with confetti rain had already started, animations indicated the new jackpot amounting to two million euros and the four suitcases of money had already been carried into the studio when moderator Steven Gätjen ordered the last attempt of the last game to be repeated on the instructions of the responsible notary. However, Raab also won the rerun and with it the show.
- In the 48th edition of September 13, 2014, in the second game ("role names"), the characters that an actor embodies in a certain series should be named. After a series of unsuccessful rounds, the moderator initially reduced the required number of correct answers from six to three. When the score was 1: 1, he finally switched to a sudden death decision, which Raab managed by correctly naming Ed O'Neill's role name as Al Bundy .
- As the longest ever completed game, the 15th and decisive game ( Ringing the Bull ) in the 49th edition was canceled after almost an hour of broadcasting time without evaluation because neither player had managed to cope with the task. The substitute game "Flummis" brought the decision in favor of the candidate after just a few minutes.
- In the 50th edition that followed, Ringing the Bull was announced as the first game. After the set-up was brought into the studio, however, moderator Steven Gätjen resolved that it was a joke. The game only had a comeback over five years later in the 50th edition of Schlag den Star as a scaled-down version called Ringing the Bullchen .
- In the 54th edition of October 24, 2015, a race was driven on a Segway -based electric wheelchair called “Freee” . Raab fell a total of three times and injured his face slightly. In his only fall-free lap, he moved the track barriers. The candidate won the game 3-0.

beat the celebrity
From 2009, ProSieben broadcast the program Schlag den Star as an offshoot of Schlag den Raab . This was designed in a similar way, but lasted only around two hours in the original format with a maximum of nine games and was not broadcast live. The game principle remained the same, the prize money was 50,000 euros, one tenth of the smallest win in a Schlag den Raab broadcast. After the end of Schlag den Raab , Schlag den Star was redesigned for the follow-up program in 2016 and has since been broadcast live with a maximum number of regular 15 games.
In each of the first five seasons, a candidate selected by the editorial team competed against a celebrity who changed from show to show. If the celebrity won, the money also went into the jackpot and increased the possible profit in the following show. From the sixth season in the summer of 2014, two celebrities competed against each other, so that the respective winner of each program received the 50,000 euros played out and there was no longer a jackpot. Since the eighth season (with the exception of the 39th and 40th edition) the prize money has been 100,000 euros each.
Raab moderated the first season himself, from the second to the fifth season he appeared as a joker and had to be used by the candidate in one of the first six games. In the sixth and seventh seasons Raab moderated the show again and no longer appeared as a joker. After saying goodbye to Stefan Raab, Elton took over the moderation from season eight .
Hit the Henssler
On June 21, 2017 it was announced that Steffen Henssler was moving from VOX to ProSieben . At the Screenforce Days , ProSieben announced a new edition of Schlag den Raab under the title Schlag den Henssler . Henssler competed as a permanent host - like Stefan Raab until 2015 - against candidates. The program was hosted by Elton . In the run-up to the first issue, Henssler was injured, so that the broadcast of the first program was postponed from September 2, 2017 to September 30, 2017.
Daniel Rosemann , head of the ProSieben broadcaster, justified the new edition by saying that “the audience had always wanted the show to come back” . Regarding the choice of Steffen Henssler as the new host, Rosemann said that Henssler was a "sympathetic and at the same time strong-willed player who takes on every challenge" . Furthermore, Henssler has "this special, unconditional ambition to be able to survive on this show."
The new edition with Henssler was discontinued after eight issues.
Beat the best
On February 9, 2019, during the show Schlag die Star, host Elton announced that there will be another offshoot of the show called Schlag den beste . The program is partly produced in the old design by Schlag den Star , but two non-celebrity people play in up to 11 (or 12 in the case of a jump-off) games for a total of 50,000 euros each. The winner of the show (the “best”) competes against another candidate in the following edition, so that the profit can always increase by a further 50,000 euros. Production of the show started at the end of May 2019, with Elton also being the moderator. The show has been broadcast on ProSieben since August 8, 2019.
