jackpot

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The term jackpot ( American jack = jack; pot = pot, collecting vessel) comes from the card game poker and later found its way into other games of chance where the term game pot is used as a synonym.

poker

The jackpot is a special opening variant of Draw Poker . Before the cards are dealt, the players pay an agreed amount ( ante ) into the pot, usually in the middle of the table, where all bets of the game round are. The dealer now distributes the cards to the individual players and then asks the players in turn whether one of them has received at least two jacks . The first player to whom this applies opens the game. If neither player fulfills this condition, the game round is over, the stakes remain in the jackpot and the cards are dealt again. The jackpot remains in place until a player has successfully completed a round of poker - winning the entire jackpot.

lotto

The term jackpot is also used in other games of chance , such as state lotteries. This generally means stakes for which none of the participating players meet the winning conditions and which will also be paid out to the winners in the next draw. If the jackpot does not win any number of times in a row , it continues to increase and the other players have the prospect of a bigger win if the chance of winning is the same .

The highest jackpot in German lottery history was EUR 38,455,999.20. Together with 5% of the stakes for the drawing on December 5, 2007, around 45.3 million euros were distributed to three winners in the 1st prize category (6 correct numbers with a super number). The lottery companies' effective advertising claim that the jackpot had risen to over EUR 43 million in the last few days before the drawing is incorrect according to the above definition.

In Germany, however, the jackpot in the German Lotto and Totoblock cannot be increased indefinitely due to a regulation - the winnings are transferred to the next lower winnings class if in 12 (up to 2009: 14) consecutive draws there is no winner in the relevant (generally the highest ) Prize class has been determined; this procedure is referred to as a compulsory distribution , which is carried out on the 13th (previously: 15th) draw. This compulsory distribution has been abolished for the Eurojackpot .

In the USA the jackpots are usually many times larger than they ever will be in Germany. The highest jackpot to date was hit on May 18, 2013 and was $ 590.5 million. After 13 rollovers, which made the jackpot rise each time, 83-year-old Gloria MacKenzie won the huge sum. In the United States, it is common for taxes to be deducted from total winnings. So the $ 590.5 million can be described as gross profit. The special thing about this jackpot was that one person won the entire winnings. The second highest jackpot in the USA was hit by two people on November 28, 2012. The jackpot was 587.5 million US dollars, which was only distributed after 15 rollovers. Two winners could share the sum. One of the players was from Missouri and the other from Arizona. The third highest jackpot was hit in 2006. At the time, $ 365 million was in the jackpot after 18 rollovers and heading for Nebraska.

Slot machines

This term is also used for slot machines ( one-armed bandit ) in a casino if several machines in the casino (local jackpot, house jackpot) or even machines from several casinos (national jackpot, e.g. Bayern jackpot) are connected together. A certain proportion of every stake is put into the jackpot, which can be won at a machine.
