The euro jackpot

Eurojackpot is a numbers lottery that has been played since 2012 and is played jointly in 18 participating European countries.

Draw and jackpot

The numbers are drawn every Friday evening in Helsinki, Finland at 8 p.m. (German time). The drawing can only be followed live on Finnish TV; it is not broadcast directly in the other EU countries. From 9 p.m. (German time) the winning numbers and odds will be announced on the Internet every Friday evening. A jackpot of at least € 10 million is guaranteed for each drawing . If this is not won, the jackpot increases (from Friday drawing to Friday drawing) up to a limit of € 90 million. If the jackpot is still not cracked when the limit of € 90 million is reached, the additional amount will be transferred to prize class 2, i.e. H. every additional euro above the jackpot limit of € 90 million goes to prize class 2.

  • The probability of winning the Euro Jackpot of € 90 million in prize class 1 is 1:95 million players.
  • The probability of winning in prize class 2 is 1: 6 million players.

With game participant is meant the individual participation or a tip. A person (at least 18 years of age or of legal age ) can of course take part in a drawing several times or use system tickets to make several predictions for a Euro Jackpot drawing.

Use of game revenue

Half of the proceeds will be distributed to the lottery participants. The other half - minus the costs for the lottery companies - goes into the state treasury of the participating countries with the stipulation that it supports charitable projects. The stake is € 2.00 per tip. The German lottery companies also charge a processing fee for each ticket. For example, this is € 0.75 in North Rhine-Westphalia and € 0.60 for a ticket in Lower Saxony.

First jackpot winners

The first jackpot in the amount of 19,536,863.80 euros was won by a syndicate from the Ruhr area ( North Rhine-Westphalia , Germany ) in the drawing on May 11, 2012.

€ 90,000,000.00 jackpots

Jackpots in the amount of € 90,000,000.00 were won several times in one sum. On August 23, 2019, a Finnish syndicate from Siilinjärvi , consisting of 50 players , who had played a system ticket for € 500.00, won the maximum jackpot amount plus additional prizes from the lower prize categories, i.e. the record profit of € 91,938,695.00.

Five more € 90,000,000 prizes were shared. On January 6, 2017, five individual players from Berlin, Hesse, Lower Saxony, the Netherlands and Denmark each won one fifth of the 90,000,000 euros, as did five individual players from Hamburg, Hesse, Finland, Italy and Spain each one fifth on November 16, 2018 who won 90,000,000 euros. On July 6, 2018, two players from the federal states of Saxony-Anhalt and Hesse each won half of the 90,000,000 euros and on May 10, 2019, two players from North Rhine-Westphalia and Poland. On November 22, 2019, three players from Bavaria, Hesse and Hungary each won a third of the 90,000,000 euros.

Rule changes

In the beginning there was a regulation for the compulsory distribution of the jackpot after the twelfth drawing, but this only came into effect once (on August 10, 2012 in the amount of € 27,545,857.50) and has been suspended since February 1, 2013. Since October 10, 2014, the Euro numbers have been played according to the formula 2 out of 10 instead of the previous 2 out of 8.

Highest single wins

The jackpot of 90,000,000 euros has been cracked six times by a single winner, most recently on May 1, 2020.

Prize tiers

In the Eurojackpot lottery there are 12 different prize categories to which the prize money is distributed. 50% of the stake is paid out as a winnings. To win in the lowest prize category, 2 correct numbers and 1 euro number are required. 5 correct and 2 correct euro numbers are required for the main prize.

A distribution of 10 million is guaranteed in the first prize class. If the game income is not sufficient for this, this distribution will be replenished from the booster fund . With each drawing, 12 percent of the total distribution, rounding residues and unclaimed winnings flow into this.

Odds of winning

The winning class of a game results from the combination of the number of correct numbers in field A (from 50 numbers 5 are typed and 5 drawn) and field B (from 10 euro numbers, 2 are typed and 2 drawn).

Before October 10, 2014 five out of 50 numbers, but two out of (only) eight so-called euro numbers, were typed. Before this change in the game formula, the chances of a main win were better (1: 59.325.280), but the probabilities of the prize categories without the correct euro number (3, 6, 10) were lower before the change, as it was more likely to add one or two Typing Euro numbers correctly. In particular, the chance of two correct euro numbers was better before. The probability of reaching any prize category was previously around 1:21, around a fifth higher than it was afterwards, at around 1:26.

Strategic game

Previous and subsequent drawings have no influence on the probability of a current drawing. Every bet has the same chance of winning in every drawing (1: 95,344,200). It is therefore irrelevant from a mathematical point of view whether you always play the same or different number combinations. The winning numbers of the previous draws also have the same chances of winning as any other tip. It also doesn't matter how many times a number was drawn in the past; every number has the same probability before the drawing.

However, there are numbers and number combinations that, on average, are played more often than others. Although this does not change their probability, it has an impact on the expected value of a tip, which always represents a loss in relation to the stake in the lottery. Numbers and number combinations that are played very often can expect a lower profit than those that are played less often. This is because the amount of money from a prize tier is divided among the winners. This uneven distribution of the numbers typed is due to the fact that many people play birthdays, patterns or lucky numbers or numbers that were not drawn as often in the past.

In theory it would be possible to “buy” a jackpot by tapping on all possible combinations. Such a tip would currently cost 190,688,400 euros. With the current average number of participants across the prize categories, which you fully serve with a complete tip, you would get back a little less than half of the stake, since 50% of the stakes flow into the payout: with current usage around 90,000,000 euros. If the jackpot would now be higher than 101,000,000 euros, it is possible with the risk of a split jackpot to buy it below its actual value. In order not to let this incentive arise, the jackpot is currently limited to 90,000,000 euros.

Addictive

Due to the higher jackpots, experts warn that this lottery could be more addictive than the conventional lottery in Germany ( 6 out of 49 ).

Eurojackpot.de warns on its website: For most people, participating in lotteries is a harmless leisure activity that they have easily integrated into their everyday life. However, gambling can also be addicting.

Imitations and Internet participation

Bookmakers on the Internet offer bets on the winning numbers in the Eurojackpot. Often this only results from the small print (e.g. the company is registered in a tax haven ) or the lack of it. Attempts are made to give the impression that you are participating in the official lottery. According to German law, such offers are not permitted and participation in them is at least legally in a gray area. Whether a bookmaker is able to pay out a possible 90 million profit seems questionable. Internet participation in the correct lottery is only possible in Germany through commercial game agents approved in Germany and the state lottery companies themselves. A list of the commercial game brokers approved in Germany can be found on the website of the Lower Saxony Ministry of the Interior and Sport.
