Das Ding des Jahres ( DDDJ for short ) is a German entertainment show that was first broadcast on ProSieben on February 9, 2018 . In the show, inventors compete against each other with their product in order to win an advertising deal on the ProSiebenSat.1 Group channels worth 2.5 million euros in the first season and prize money of 100,000 euros since the second season. Almost 100 inventions are presented in one season.
The first season with 6 episodes ran in February and March 2018, the winner was the foldable car trailer Faltos by inventor Ulrich Müller.
The second season was broadcast with 6 episodes in February and March 2019. The winners were the inventors Eduard Wiebe and Andreas Neitzel with the Rollikup wheelchair trailer hitch .
A third season for 2020 was announced in the finale of the second season. This was recorded in November 2019. The winner was the follow-up developed by Christoph Kleber and Edna Kleber- Belizário .
The show is produced based on an idea by Stefan Raab .
concept
Preliminary round
In each episode there is a total of four duels in the 1st season or five duels since the 2nd season, in which two participants compete against each other with an invention. After a movie, the inventor presents his product to the audience and the jury in more detail; only the jury can try the product and ask questions. For each duel, the studio audience decides the winner of the duel. From all participants, there are four (1st season) or five (since 2nd season) duel winners left who will compete against each other for a final vote at the end of the episode. The studio audience now decides who will make it to the final. In the first season, the jury also decided in the final vote - regardless of the studio audience - a duel winner who should move into the final. If the jury and the studio audience chose different inventions, then both made it to the final.
The preliminary rounds are recorded beforehand.
In the third season, a preliminary round was replaced by a duel between two inventions by children or young people.
final
In the final, which was broadcast live in the first two seasons, the finalists from the preliminary rounds were divided into two groups. After a film that summarized the response to the product after it was broadcast on TV, and after a brief conversation with the presenter, another clip was shown with a making-of for the commercial. After all products of the group had been presented, the advertising sports of the respective invention were presented for the first time. Afterwards, the audience in seasons one and two could vote by televoting which invention should be included in the final vote. From each group, the two inventions with the most votes progress.
In the final vote, the winner is finally selected, again in the first two seasons by televoting, and the invention thus receives the title The thing of the year as well as an advertising deal worth 2.5 million euros on the ProSiebenSat.1 channels - Group in the 1st season or a prize money of 100,000 euros since the second season.
The procedure and the point system of the finale of the third season were slightly changed. This episode was also pre-recorded.
Contributors
The show is moderated by the actress and presenter Janin Ullmann . The jury includes the model and presenter Lena Gercke , the presenter and start-up investor Joko Winterscheidt and the Rewe Group's head of purchasing, Hans-Jürgen Moog. Lea-Sophie Cramer , founder and managing director of the adult mail order company Amorelie , has been strengthening the jury since the second season .

season 2
A second season was announced at Screenforce Days on June 21, 2018. The preliminary rounds were recorded in January 2019, the live final took place on March 26, 2019. The preliminary rounds ran every Tuesday at 8:15 p.m. from February 19. There were some changes compared to the first season, so the jury is now strengthened by Lea-Sophie Cramer , founder and managing director of the adult mail order company Amorelie. In addition, the inventions now compete against each other in thematically appropriate duels, for example in the area of household items or mobility. There are now five duels per preliminary round, each with two competing inventions. In contrast to the first season, the voting for participation in the finals now takes place exclusively by the audience, the jury does not make an active decision. The advertising deal worth 2.5 million euros as the final prize was also replaced by prize money of 100,000 euros. This was won by the Rollikup , a wheelchair trailer coupling .

reception
Review of the 1st season
The reviews of the first season are rather negative. Anja Rützel wrote on Spiegel Online that the thing of the year is not “about marketability, but about subjective enthusiasm”. It is a “trullala version of the lion's den .” In addition, many inventions are not new. The inventions were also received negatively on t-online.de . "Do not any [...] to great sellers and easy for a joke." The sound introductory films about the products were "extremely long-winded," said Manuel Japes on bild.de . The recording length of around four hours means that in the course of the episode the studio audience, the jury and the moderator appear “tired” and “noticeably infected by the boredom”. "If Stefan Raab had moderated the show, success would probably be guaranteed," said Japes.
According to Peer Schader, the concept is "a bit under-spectacular - especially since the premiere lacked variety and speed." However, he wrote on DWDL.de that the idea was not bad. “ The thing of the year could run in the first at any time without too big adjustments .” It is “sympathetic, solid TV entertainment for the whole family.” But according to Schader, the show is “massively lacking in height and speed for ProSieben standards "And don't pay attention to ProSieben, because the broadcaster" otherwise likes to let it rip in its shows. "
Manuel Nunez Sanchez from Oddsmeter.de received the show more positively . "High quality, well staffed (at least predominantly), but more of a follower than a trendsetter," said Nunez Sanchez, who also criticized the "shockingly low level of innovation". His colleague David Grzeschik is also of the opinion that “a general quota success of the first season [...] [seems] quite possible; The format is undoubtedly properly produced. "
Review of the 2nd season
In the 2nd season, the Kochblume , the winner of the 4th preliminary round, was particularly criticized. "The potential thing of the year has been on the market for many years". ProSieben spokesman Christoph Körfer responded to this criticism. According to him, The Thing of the Year is an "inventor's show and a competition for inventions that the general public has not yet heard of: It doesn't matter whether the invention is a prototype, ready for series production or already on sale."
