Die Höhle der Löwen (also DHDL for short ) is a German entertainment show that was first broadcast by the TV station VOX in August 2014 . It is an offshoot of the UK program Dragons' Den , a concept produced and marketed worldwide by Sony Pictures Television . The Lion's Den is broadcast weekly on Tuesdays at 8:15 p.m.

While the series always started in late summer on VOX, it was continued for the first time in 2020 with a spring season. Frank Thelen announced in mid-November 2019 that he wanted to leave the show after this season.

concept

On the show, startups , inventors and company founders seek venture capital to grow their business. They present their innovative business concepts to the “lions” and offer them business shares in relation to the determined company value. The “lions” are prominent investors who invest their own money in companies of their choice and provide them with professional support with their knowledge and experience. The presentations shown in a broadcast have been cut from various recordings and are not temporally related. Not all recorded pitches are broadcast. The products presented are mainly aimed at end consumers and are usually available in online shops and many supermarkets at the same time as the broadcast of the program. Despite the extensive product presentations on television and the increase in sales after it was broadcast, the show is not considered an all-time commercial .

season 1

The first season of the show started on August 19, 2014 on VOX. The moderator was Amiaz Habtu . As "lions" were Lencke Wischhusen (formerly Steiner), Judith Williams , Vural Öger , Jochen Schweizer and Frank Thelen selected.

Due to the above-average audience ratings, VOX extended the first season at short notice by a ninth episode, which consisted of the reunion of companies from the first episodes as well as four new start-ups.

Due to the high audience ratings, the second season of the show started on August 18, 2015 on VOX. Amiaz Habtu continued to moderate, and the selection of the “lions” remained unchanged with Lencke Wischhusen, Judith Williams, Vural Öger, Jochen Schweizer and Frank Thelen. season 3

During the current second, VOX announced the production of a third season. At the beginning of 2016, two “lions” announced that they would no longer be seen there: Travel operator Vural Öger wanted to go after the bankruptcy of his company V.Ö. Travel will no longer be available as a juror and investor. On January 17, 2016, Carsten Maschmeyer was named as his successor and founded an investment company especially for participation in the show. The show also left Lencke Wischhusen that henceforth strengthened their political task in Bremen wanted to dedicate. The entrepreneur Ralf Dümmel was named as the successor to her position .

Filming for the third season began in February 2016; the first episode aired on August 23, 2016. The September 20, 2016 episode reached the 3 million viewer mark for the first time in the show's history.

Season 4

On October 12, 2016, a fourth season of the show was ordered by VOX. At the beginning of November 2016 it was announced that Jochen Schweizer would be leaving as an investor. He justified this with the fact that he wanted to focus more on the construction of his Jochen Schweizer Arena . The former member of the Bundestag Dagmar Wöhrl was confirmed as her successor . As an investor, Wöhrl represents her son's hotel chain, Marcus Maximilian Wöhrl, and her husband's intro group, Hans Rudolf Wöhrl .

The fourth season was recorded in the spring of 2017 and aired from September 5 to November 21, 2017. During the shoot, Judith Williams was represented twice by Georg Kofler for health reasons .

The sixth season aired from September 3 to November 12, 2019.

Nils Glagau was there as the new “lion” . In addition, Judith Williams and Georg Kofler no longer appeared as investors together, but invested separately. Season 7

For the first time, VOX broadcast six new episodes of the show in the spring of each year. These were broadcast from March 10th to April 21st, 2020. Investor Frank Thelen announced after the 6th season 2019 that he wanted to leave the show after the 7th season.

On April 6, 2020, a special called Die Höhle der Löwen - Der Talk was broadcast. The program was moderated by Amiaz Habtu and Tanit Koch .

Season 8

The eighth season will be broadcast on VOX in autumn 2020. As the new Leo, Nico Rosberg will replace Frank Thelen .

criticism

In the media it was repeatedly criticized that many of the deals concluded in the program fail in the renegotiations between the investor and the company founder after the program, although an agreement between the two parties is reached on the program. So 26 of the 35 deals closed in season one and two failed in the negotiations after the show, which corresponds to a rate of almost 75% and with which only nine deals were actually implemented. A spokesman for VOX justifies the subsequent failure of many deals with the fact that during the due diligence check of the companies after the broadcast, some untruths in the statements of the founders come to light or that “Leo” and the founder do not agree on certain contractual points. In addition, deals were canceled after competing products were discovered or, if two “lions” made a joint investment, one of the two subsequently withdrew.

In the third season, 31 deals were closed, almost as many as in seasons one and two combined (35), most of which lasted even after the broadcast. Ralf Dümmel invested more than three million euros in 22 companies.

Consumer advocates consider the show for advertising and define The Lion's Den as a kind of home shopping . However, unlike with QVC or HSE24, there is no “continuous advertising” above it. “That would not be attractive for the sale of the lion's den products”.

Very shortly after the broadcast, in the meantime mostly at the same time, the products are already for sale and are advertised as “from the Vox founder show” without being adequately tested. Shortly after its introduction, the discounter Aldi sold a liquid mobile phone screen protector that was supposed to protect the mobile phone against hammer blows. In practice, this could not keep the promise.

The lack of courage among investors to support social projects is also criticized. The deposit ring and the emergency telephone for children (Locca) were not accepted, despite their clear social benefit. Sirplus and Suncrafter were also rejected because they did not want to imagine the long-term benefits and none of the founders was able to assess the practical implementation. In other, more investment-driven projects, even detailed questions such as the distribution channels for reindeer meat were not a problem. When promoting sustainable, future-oriented projects, the “lions” mainly focus on the image, not the actual benefit of the project.
