Dragons' Den

Dragons' Den is the title of a British reality TV format of which there are numerous international offshoots. Sony Pictures Television holds the rights . The basic concept comes from Japan , but the details of the international variants are based on the British concept.

concept

In the show, company founders compete with innovative business concepts who are looking for investors. They present their business idea and offer shares in their company. Potential investors are the “dragons”, who are real investors who ultimately invest their own money in the selected companies and also support them with know-how .

International versions

Afghanistan

In Afghanistan , the show was broadcast under the name Fikr wa Talash ( Dream and Achieve ) and received a lot of media attention as it sent a sign of hope in the war-torn country.

Australia

In Australia , the show was broadcast under the original title. The first season was broadcast by Seven Network in 2005 . In 2015 there was a new edition on the television channel Ten under the title Shark Tank .

Germany

The German title is Die Höhle der Löwen . The first episode aired on August 19, 2014 on VOX . The moderator is Ermias Habtu . The original "lions" are Lencke Steiner , Judith Williams , Jochen Schweizer , Vural Öger and Frank Thelen .

According to the participants, the broadcast should also strengthen the start-up culture in Germany. As a result, it received the appropriate attention in the German startup scene in advance .

Finland

In Finland the first season was called Leijonan kita ( snapdragon ). It was first broadcast on September 27, 2007. Lisa Sounio was among the investors for this season .

A follow-up program started in February 2013 on the Finnish private broadcaster Nelonen , this time under the title Leijonan luola ( The Lions' Den ).

Great Britain

The UK's first season began broadcasting January 4, 2005 on BBC Two . In the summer of 2014, the 12th season began broadcasting.

Ireland

In Ireland, as of summer 2014, six seasons have been broadcast since 2009. According to the homepage of the station RTÉ, an edition for children and teenagers is also planned there (Junior Dragons' Den).

Israel

The Israeli edition is called Hakrishim , which translated means The Sharks . Among the Israeli investors was Nir Barkat .

Japan

The Japanese version マ ネ ー の 虎 Manê no Tora (Money Tiger) is the actual original. The show was broadcast between 2001 and 2004 by Nippon Terebi Hōsōmō and was the first Japanese entertainment program to deal with business issues. During the three-year term, 16 Japanese businessmen appeared as tigers .

Canada

In Canada there are both an English and a French-language version of the show. While the English version has the original title, the French version is called Dans L'Oeil du Dragon ( In the Eye of the Dragon ).

The first season of the English version started on October 3, 2006. A total of eight seasons have been broadcast so far, a ninth has been announced.

The French-language program has aired three seasons since 2012.

Kenya

In Kenya, the format is broadcast under the name Lions' Den on the channel KCB (Kenya Broadcasting Corporation).

Croatia

In Croatia , Dragons' Den was called Zmajevo gnijezdo . It aired a season in 2007.

Lebanon

In Lebanon, Dragons 'Den was known as Dragons' Den: Al Aareen العرين ( The Den ) and was broadcast on the Lebanese broadcaster Future Television . The broadcast was seen throughout the Arab world and both candidates and “dragons” came from various Arab countries.

New Zealand

In New Zealand, five seasons have been broadcast on Television New Zealand since 2006 . Among the dragons was actress Julie Christie .

Netherlands

In the Netherlands it was first broadcast on Nederland 3 from May 2007 . A second season followed in 2008.

Nigeria

A season was broadcast in 2007 by the Nigerian broadcaster AIT Network.

Austria

The first season of the Austrian version was shown from November 2013 under the title "2 minutes 2 million" on the Puls 4 channel , moderated by Daniel Cronin and Sonya Kraus . A second season was shown in early 2015, without the two presenters.

Poland

In Poland, the format is called Dragons 'Den - jak zostać milionerem ( Dragons' Den - How to become a millionaire ) and was broadcast by the private broadcaster TV 4 .

Romania

The Romanian variant is called Arena Leilor (Arena of the Lions).

Russia

The title of the Russian version is capital . One of the investors in the Russian edition of the show was so unimpressed by the business models presented that he didn't invest in any.

Saudi Arabia

In 2009 the format was licensed by the Saudi TV station STV1. It was broadcast in 2010 under the name Altujar التجار . It was the first foreign television concept licensed by Saudi television.

Slovenia

The Slovenian edition is called Dober Posel ( Good Deal ).

Spain

In Spain the show is called Tu Oportunidad (Your Chance). It was first broadcast in 2013.

Sweden

Under the title Draknästet ( Dragon Nest the format was in 2009 and 2010) svt2 broadcast. A 2014 season is planned.

Switzerland

In Switzerland, the first season of the format started under the name Die Höhle der Löwen Schweiz on May 21, 2019 on TV24 .

Czech Republic

The first broadcast in the Czech Republic was on March 31, 2009, it ran under the title Den D (The D-Day). Among the investors was the politician and entrepreneur Tomio Okamura .

Turkey

The name of the Turkish branch is simply Dragons' Den Türkiye .

Ukraine

In Ukraine, the format ran under the title Акули бізнесу ( Business Sharks ). One of the "sharks" there was the later Deputy Prime Minister Serhiy Tihipko .

United States

The title of the American variant is Shark Tank ( shark tank ). Eight seasons have already aired, investing more than $ 100 million and creating over 10,000 jobs. The regular cast includes the Sharks Barbara Corcoran, Mark Cuban , Lori Greiner, Robert Herjavec, Daymond John and Kevin O'Leary. Personalities such as Steve Tisch and John Paul DeJoria are added as guest investors .
