Nir Barkat ( Hebrew ניר ברקת; Born October 19, 1959 in Jerusalem ) is an Israeli businessman and politician. He was elected Mayor of Jerusalem on November 11, 2008, took office on December 3, 2008, and was re-elected in 2013. Moshe Lion succeeded him on December 4, 2018.

Life

Barkat was born in Jerusalem in 1959, where he also grew up. He served six years in the Paratrooper Brigade of the Israeli Army (1977-1983), from which he retired with the rank of major . He then studied computer science and business administration at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem . In 1988 he founded a software company specializing in antivirus software.

In 2003, Barkat entered politics with the establishment of the Yerushalayim Tatzliyah (Jerusalem Will Succeed ) party . In the same year he was defeated in the mayoral election campaign by the ultra-Orthodox candidate Uri Lupolianski with 43% of the votes and thus became opposition leader. On November 11, 2008, he won the election for mayor of Jerusalem against his ultra-Orthodox rival Meir Porush of Yahadut HaTorah with 52% to 43% of the vote. Lupolianski did not run again. In the following mayoral election in 2013, Barkat prevailed in the runoff election against his Orthodox rival Moshe Lion.

In December 2015 he switched to Likud , which was immediately interpreted as a sign of a possible application to succeed Netanyahu .

Barkat is married and has three daughters.
