Uri Lupolianski

Uri Lupolianski , Hebrew אורי לופוליאנסקי, (* 1951 in Haifa ) is an Israeli politician. From 2003 to 2008 he was mayor of Jerusalem . He is the first ultra-Orthodox Jew to be elected mayor.

Lupolianski was elected to Jerusalem City Council in 1989 . He held the executive positions of Deputy Mayor and Chairman of the Building and Planning Committee and was responsible for family matters.

In 1976 he founded Yad Sarah , an organization that offers the sick, the elderly and the lonely a wide range of assistance in memory of his grandmother Sara Lupolianski who died in the Holocaust. Today Yad Sarah has 6,000 volunteer members and 96 offices across the country.

Lupolianski has received numerous prizes and awards for his work with Yad Sarah, including the Israel Prize , the President's Volunteer Prize , the Knesset Speaker's Award and the Kaplan Prize for Proficiency.

biography

Born in Haifa, Lupolianski attended the Yavne School in Haifa and then the Yeshivat Hanegev School . He had served in the Israel Defense Forces and worked as a teacher in a religious school in Jerusalem before founding Yad Sarah. He is married and has twelve children.
