Serhiy Tihipko Leonidowytsch ( Ukrainian Сергій Леонідович Тігіпко , Russian Сергей Леонидович Тигипко * 13 February 1960 in Drăgăneşti at Belzy , Moldavian SSR , Soviet Union ) is a Ukrainian businessman and politician. From March 2010 to February 2014 he was Deputy Prime Minister of Ukraine. He was a member of the Party of Regions from March 2010 to April 2014 .

Life

Tihipko graduated from the Metallurgical Institute in Dnipropetrovsk in 1982 with a degree in metallurgical engineer and obtained the degree of doctor of economics. He then served in the armored forces of the Red Army from 1982 to 1984 . From 1984 he worked in the management of a secondary school in Dnepropetrovsk. In 1989 he became first secretary of the Komsomol regional committee and in 1991 deputy chairman of the board of directors of Dnipro Commercial Bank, and in 1992 he became chairman of the board of PrivatBank .

From 1994 to 1997 Tihipko advised the Ukrainian President Leonid Kuchma on currency issues and in 1997 became Deputy Prime Minister for Economy. From 1997 to 2001 he was deputy chairman of the state commission for administrative reforms. In 1999 he also became Minister of Economics and 2000 Member of Parliament. From 2002 to 2004 he was President of the National Bank of Ukraine . From 2005 he became CEO of the financial group TAS and in 2007 CEO of LLC Svedbank . In 2008 he became an advisor to the Prime Minister. On June 16, 2009, he resigned from all business positions to focus on politics. His fortune is on 369 million US dollar appreciated. Thus he is one of the richest Ukrainians.

As chairman of the “ Strong Ukraine ” party, Tihipko resigned in the 2010 presidential elections in Ukraine , taking third place behind Viktor Yanukovych and Yulia Tymoshenko with 13.05% of the votes cast . During the 2010 election campaign, he took the position that Ukraine should be integrated into Europe in the long term, but that it was still too early for membership of the European Union and NATO . It is important to improve relations with Russia and, if an offer is made, to continue leasing the port of Sevastopol to the Russian Black Sea Fleet . However, he also called for a change in the gas treaties with Russia. He advocated a tax amnesty to reduce the shadow economy and stabilize the Ukrainian tax system. In the dispute over whether Russian should become the official language , he did not speak out in favor of recognizing Russian as the official language. In contrast to Julija Tymoshenko, however, he gave interviews in Ukrainian and Russian.

After the presidential elections, which were won by Viktor Yanukovych, he made him Deputy Prime Minister in the Azarov cabinet in March 2010 .

After the party “Strong Ukraine” merged with the Party of Regions in March 2012, Tihipko was Vice Chairman of the Party of Regions .

In the presidential election in Ukraine in 2014 , he ran as an independent candidate, reaching 5.23% of the vote. By contrast, his party had declared Mychajlo Dobkin to be its official candidate by party convention resolution . After Tihipko did not withdraw his candidacy, he was expelled from the Party of Regions on April 7, 2014. Tihipko then reactivated “Strong Ukraine”. In the parliamentary elections in Ukraine in 2014 , the party received 3.11% of the vote.

Private

Tigipko is married to the entrepreneur Viktoriya Tigipko (* 1973). The couple have three children together.
