Valerija Olexijivna Hontarewa (born October 20, 1964 in Dnipropetrovsk , Ukrainian SSR ) is a Ukrainian economist and former president of the National Bank of Ukraine .

Life

Valery Hontareva studied economics at the National Technical University of Ukraine "KPI" until 1987 . Since 1993 she has worked in the banking sector in Ukraine, including in the Kiev branches of the Dutch ING Groep and the French Société Générale . In 1997 she graduated from the National Wadym-Hetman University of Economics in Kiev with a master's degree in economics.

In June 2008 she was awarded a medal and certificate by the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine for her personal contribution to the development of the Ukrainian stock market and high professionalism .

From September 2013 to June 17, 2014 she was chairman of the supervisory board of PAT Bank Awanhard ( ПАТ “Банк Авангард” ). On June 19, 2014, she replaced Stepan Kubiw as President of the Ukrainian National Bank. On June 23, 2014, she became a member of the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine . In April 2017, she submitted her resignation from the central bank chair.

Valeria Hontarewa is married and has two sons. She speaks Ukrainian, Russian and English.

After her house near Kiev was set on fire on the night of September 17, 2019, she was hit by a car in London and at the beginning of October 2019 strangers set her daughter-in-law's car on fire in Kiev. Links between the attacks and their leadership role in the nationalization of Ihor Kolomoyskyi's private bank are suspected.
