Jakiw Wassyljowytsch Smolij ( Ukrainian Яків Васильович Смолій ; born February 1, 1961 in Werbowez , Ukrainian SSR ) is a Ukrainian mathematician , economist and President of the National Bank of Ukraine . In this role he is also a member of the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine .

Life

Yakiv Smolij was born in the village of Verbovets ( Вербовець ) in Lanivtsi district of the Ukrainian region of Ternopil . Until 1983 he studied applied mathematics at the Ivan Franko University in Lviv . During his studies between 1981 and 1983 he worked as a laboratory assistant in the research department of this university. From 1983 to 1987 he worked as a software engineer, mathematician and junior researcher at the Institute for Finance and Economics in Ternopil . In 1987 he moved to the Ternopiler radio factory "Orion" ( Тернопільський радіозавод "Оріон" ), where he worked until 1991 as a software engineer, senior software engineer and head of the Orion factory office. He then headed the IT department as a leading engineer between 1991 and 1994 and also held the position of deputy head of the Ternopil regional department of the National Bank of Ukraine. From 1994 to 2005, Smolij initially headed the automation department and was later deputy chairman of the board of Aval Post-Pension Bank. In 2005 he sold his shares in the bank to the Austrian Raiffeisen Bank International . He has been a candidate in economics since 2002 . From 2006 to 2014 he was director of banking for Prestige Group LLC .

He became Deputy Chairman on April 25, 2014, First Deputy Chairman in October 2016, and President of the National Bank of Ukraine on March 15, 2018. Following a presidential decree of September 6, 2019, he also became a member of the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine .

Smolij is considered the richest civil servant in the country with a fortune of ten million dollars. He is married and has two daughters.
