Ardengost is a French commune with 13 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Hautes-Pyrénées department in the Occitanie region (before 2016: Midi-Pyrénées ). The municipality belongs to the arrondissement of Bagnères-de-Bigorre and the canton of Neste, Aure et Louron (until 2015: canton of Arreau ).

The inhabitants are called Ardengostois and Ardengostoises .

Ardengost is located about 26 kilometers southeast of Bagnères-de-Bigorre in the historic province of Quatre-Vallées on the southeastern edge of the department.

Ardengost is surrounded by the five neighboring communities:

Ardengost lies in the catchment area of the Garonne River .

The Ruisseau d'Ardengost, a tributary of the Neste , rises on the territory of the municipality, as does its tributaries,

the Couret d'O,
the Agalé de Pradet and
the Ruisseau Agalé de la Lit.

Toponymy

The Occitan name of the municipality is Ardengòst. There are several theories about the origin of the name. It probably comes from the root Ardeng of Aquitanian origin and with an unknown meaning and the Aquitanian suffix -ost .

The community's nickname is Eths arrabassèrs ( German the farmers and eaters of beets ).

Population development

After the beginning of the records, the population rose to a high of around 200 by the middle of the 19th century. In the following period, the size of the community fell to around 10 inhabitants during short recovery phases until the 1990s and it was able to stabilize at this level.

Parish church of Saint-Pierre-aux-Liens

The church was rebuilt in the 16th and 18th centuries. In 1996 it was restored. Your single nave nave is equipped with a barrel vault . The entrance portal on the south side, built in 1762, is protected by a vestibule. The sacristy is at the foot of the bell tower . One of the holy water fonts dates from the Middle Ages . The main altar in Baroque style with tabernacle and altarpiece dates from the 18th century, the choir bench from the 17th century. Statues made of gilded wood depicting Saints Anna and Mary with baby Jesus were made in the 17th and 14th centuries.
