Saint-Paul ( Gascon : Sent Pau de Nestés ) is a French commune with 315 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Hautes-Pyrénées department in the Occitanie region ; it belongs to the arrondissement of Bagnères-de-Bigorre and the canton of La Vallée de la Barousse (until 2015: canton of Saint-Laurent-de-Neste ). The inhabitants are called Saint-Paulais / Saint-Paulaises .
geography
Saint-Paul is located around 39 kilometers southeast of the city of Tarbes in the east of the Hautes-Pyrénées department on the border with the Haute-Garonne department. The community consists of several hamlets and numerous scattered settlements. The nest crosses the south of the municipality in an easterly direction and in parts forms the southern municipal boundary. In terms of traffic, the municipality is mainly located on the D163 and the D938. The A64 crosses the north of the municipality.
Saint-Paul is surrounded by the neighboring communities of Cuguron (in the Haute-Garonne department) in the north and northeast, Mazères-de-Neste in the east and southeast, Aventignan in the south, Montégut in the southwest and Saint-Laurent-de-Neste in the west.
history
The place appears for the first time indirectly as Ar. Galabru de Sancto Paulo in 1125 in the Bigorre copial book . In the Middle Ages, the place was within the Rivière-Verdun region, which in turn was part of the Gascogne province. The parish belonged to the district La Barthe from 1793 to 1801. In addition, Saint-Paul was from 1793 to 2015 within the canton of Saint-Laurent-de-Neste (1801 to 1870 Canton Nestier). The municipality has been part of the Bagnères-de-Bigorre arrondissement since 1801.
