geography
The municipality of Neuilh is located in the Bigorre landscape in the Pyrenees , roughly halfway between the town of Bagnères-de-Bigorre and the pilgrimage site of Lourdes and about 20 kilometers south of Tarbes . The mountain streams in the municipality of Neuilh, only 2.39 km² in size, drain on the one hand via the Géline to the Échez , on the other hand via the Oussouet , which forms the eastern municipal boundary, to the Adour . Half of the community area is forested. The village of Neuilh lies on a ridge at 698 m above sea level; the hamlets of Carrère, Hourclats, Jouambaou, Dart, Sarthé and Barrouquère also belong to the municipality of Neuilh . Neuilh is surrounded by the neighboring communities of Astugue in the north, Labassère in the east, Germs-sur-l'Oussouet in the south, Arrodets-ez-Angles in the southwest and Ossun-ez-Angles in the west.
Place name
In the 12th century the place name Al Casterar de Nulh appeared for the first time . This was followed by the spelling de Nulh (1313 and 1326), the Latin de Nuillo (1342) and Nulh (1429 and 1760), before the name Neuilh , which is still valid today, finally prevailed at the end of the 18th century . The name probably goes back to the Latin word nuculum (= small walnut) .
