Batsère is a French commune with 36 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Hautes-Pyrénées department in the Occitanie region (before 2016: Midi-Pyrénées ). The municipality belongs to the arrondissement of Bagnères-de-Bigorre and the canton of La Vallée de l'Arros et des Baïses (until 2015: canton of La Barthe-de-Neste ).

The inhabitants are called Batsérois and Batséroises .

Batsère is located about eleven kilometers east of Bagnères-de-Bigorre in the historic vice-county of Nébouzan .

Batsère lies in the catchment area of the Adour River . The Arros , one of its tributaries, forms the natural border with the neighboring municipality of Espèche to the east.

Toponymy

The Occitan name of the municipality is Vathsèra. The first part "Bat" is derived from the Gascognischen vath ( German  valley ). There are various theories surrounding the second part, none of which seem plausible. So its origin remains unclear.

  • Homines de Vallesserra (1300, elevation in Bigorre),
  • De Batsera (1313, Debita regi Navarre tax list ),

  • Batxère (1750, 1793 and 1801, map from Cassini , Notice Communale or Bulletin des lois ).

Population development

After records began, the population rose to a peak of around 180 by the second half of the 19th century. In the following period, the size of the community decreased to 30 inhabitants with brief recovery phases by the 1980s, before a growth phase began, the most recent But time stagnates again.
