history

The municipality was the seat of a manorial estate with a castle, which has disappeared today and whose ruins still existed until the end of the 19th century. The Gontaut-Biron family owned the manor in the 18th century and sold it to the community for 1,500 livres in 1767. The village was destroyed by fires in 1630 and 1732.

Toponymy

The Occitan name of the community is Badus. The name with additions like Bazus-Aure or Bazus-Neste has not become common. Its origin is unclear. It could come from a proper name , such as Badusius or Badius , along with an Aquitaine suffix .

One nickname of the community is Eths canards ( German  the ducks ), another Eths pè-descaucis de Badús ( German  the have-nots of Bazus = French les va-pieds-nus ). This is an indication that residents often did work on the river, such as building weirs. They performed them barefoot ( French pieds-nus ).

Toponyms and mentions of Bazus-Aure were:

  • Ar. Gassie de Basus , Ar. Gassie de Bazuz and Arn. Gassia de Basus (around 1180, copial book of the County of Bigorre),
  • de Basucio (1387, church register des Comminges ),
  • Bazus , (1750, 1790, 1793 and 1801, map by Cassini , Département 1, Notice Communale or Bulletin des lois ),

In the following period, the size of the community fell to around 100 inhabitants during short recovery phases until the 1970s, before a phase of growth began, which, however, in recently stagnated again.

Attractions

Parish Church of Saint-Michel

The ward was a branch of Guchen. In the second half of the 16th century, the church was rebuilt while retaining elements of the original Romanesque structure from the 12th century, in particular the southern entrance portal , which is now walled up, and some consoles . The western entrance portal of the bell tower dates from 1834.

The church has a main and a north aisle, which are equipped with ribbed vaults . The nave is closed with a polygonal apse . The choir is equipped with a six-part ribbed vault with a keystone , which is decorated with three lilies . The ribbed vaults of the three bays of the main nave are four-part with modeled keystones, of which the middle one is embellished with the coat of arms of the Seigneurs at the time the church was built. The other two are decorated with a sun symbol and a fleuron . The bell tower to the west above the vestibule is covered with a polygonal helmet with raised eaves .

The Christ monogram on the tympanum of the Romanesque entrance portal is worked on with a hammer. Three Romanesque consoles have been reused on the southern pillar of the bell tower. They show a scroll, a diamond boss and a human head.

The church has been inscribed as a Monument historique since January 26, 2004 .
