Bettes is a French commune with 51 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Hautes-Pyrénées department in the Occitanie region (before 2016: Midi-Pyrénées ). The municipality belongs to the arrondissement of Bagnères-de-Bigorre and the canton of La Vallée de l'Arros et des Baïses (until 2015: canton of Bagnères-de-Bigorre ).
The inhabitants are called Bettois and Bettoises .

Bettes is located about five kilometers east of Bagnères-de-Bigorre in the historic county of Bigorre .

Bettes lies in the catchment area of the Adour River .
The Ruisseau Bidaudos, a tributary of the Arros, crosses the area of the municipality as does its tributary, the Ruisseau Barros, which has its source here.
Bettes is also irrigated by the Ruisseau de Lies, a tributary of the Luz .
Toponymy
The Occitan name of the municipality is Bètas. Several theories attempt to explain the origin, but overall it remains unclear.
The nickname of the residents of the community is Eths pelats ( German for the poor ).

Population development
After the records began, the number of inhabitants rose to a high of 230 by the middle of the 19th century. In the period that followed, the size of the community fell to this day, with only relatively short recovery phases.

Bettes is located in the AOC zones of the Porc noir de Bigorre pig breed and the Jambon noir de Bigorre ham .

- The GR 78 long-distance hiking trail, called La voie des Piémonts , leads from Carcassonne to Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port, also through the municipality of Bettes. It is considered the Camino de Santiago alongside the four main routes in France.
- The regional long-distance hiking trail GR de Pays Tour des Baronnies de Bigorre runs parallel to the GR 79 and also leads through Bettes.
