Eugène Christophe , known as le Vieux Gaulois (old Gaul), forged the fork on his racing bike, which had broken in an accident with a car, and was able to ride in front of the tour officials Continue like this with a loss of four hours - but with no prospect of victory. This time he finished seventh overall.

economy

Traditionally, the income of the residents is characterized by forest and pasture farming (milk / cheese and wool). Then there was tourism in the 20th century .

Sports

The entire deep snow area is open to skiers .

Almost every year in July, the municipality plays a role for the international cycling community in the Tour de France , because it is at the entrance to two important passes of the Pyrenees: the Col d'Aspin at 1,489 m and the Tourmalet at 2,115 m . They mostly count for the mountain classification and the entire course of the race has already been decided several times on them.
