history
The origin of Antist is a villa in Gallo-Roman times with buildings, a courtyard, garden, orchard and agricultural fields. It was at the foot of the hills that rise from the Adour valley, near the fertile fields of the valley and at the same time the pastures on the hills. Over time, the slave families who lived near the villa became serfs , later leaseholders who received a piece of land and had to pay taxes to the landlord . The landlord of Antist had a castle built and a church next to it, and later a mill near the church. The Canal d'Alaric, which was dug under the rule of the Visigoths to also irrigate the eastern part of the valley, fed this water mill .
During the Huguenot Wars , the parish church of Natist was set on fire by Protestant troops led by Gabriel de Lorges , Count of Montgomery, on their march to Orthez . At the beginning of the French Revolution , the goods and furnishings of the landlord of Antist were declared and sold as national goods. During the revolution, numerous residents of the community were obliged to do military service. In the First Empire , recruiting and seizures increased, especially with the war on the Iberian Peninsula and the subsequent invasion of the Allied army under the command of Arthur Wellesleys , who later became the Duke of Wellington .
Population development
After records began, the population rose to a peak of 195 by the middle of the 19th century. In the period that followed, the size of the community fell to 85 inhabitants with brief recovery phases up to the 1960s, before a phase of at times strong growth began continues to this day.
