Espèche is a French commune with 53 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Hautes-Pyrénées department in the Occitanie region (before 2016: Midi-Pyrénées ). The municipality belongs to the arrondissement of Bagnères-de-Bigorre and the canton of La Vallée de l'Arros et des Baïses (until 2015: canton of La Barthe-de-Neste ).

The inhabitants are called Espéchais and Espéchaises .

Espèche is located about twelve kilometers east of Bagnères-de-Bigorre in the historic vice-county of Nébouzan .

Population development

After records began, the population rose to a peak of around 365 by the middle of the 19th century. In the following period, the size of the community fell to around 35 inhabitants during short recovery phases until the 1990s, before a slight phase of growth began.

• The long-distance hiking trail GR 78, called La voie des Piémonts , leads from Carcassonne to Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port, also through the center of Espèche. It is considered the Camino de Santiago alongside the four main routes in France.
• The GR de Pays Tour des Baronnies de Bigorre long-distance hiking trail runs parallel to the GR 78 and also runs through the center of the municipality.
