Le Montaigu Hospital

The municipality has the Le Montaigu hospital , which is of national importance. It was built in 1939 on the initiative of the prefect as a sanatorium for the admission of tuberculosis patients. During the Second World War it was used to house children in holiday camps, later refugees from Spain and Belgium, and then residents of the Moselle department . Treatment for tuberculosis resumed in 1949 with 120 beds in 14 dormitories. Adolescents and young adults aged 17 to 25 were cared for, 60% of whom were from the Paris region . The staff consisted of 18 employees and seven clergymen. From 1964 onwards, the dormitories were replaced by double and triple rooms. In addition, a large number of the sick were now immigrants from the Maghreb , especially in precarious situations. With the development of therapies, a department for aftercare and rehabilitation was set up in 1965. In 1969 the hospital became an independent public institution. In 1980 a department for long-term therapy was opened. The hospital was now open to various diseases and no longer tuberculosis.
