Saint-Laurent-de-Neste ( Occitan : Sent Laurenç (de Nestés) ) is a French commune with 927 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Hautes-Pyrénées department in the Occitania region ; it belongs to the arrondissement of Bagnères-de-Bigorre and the canton of La Vallée de la Barousse (until 2015: canton of Saint-Laurent-de-Neste ). The inhabitants are called Saint-Laurenchais / Saint-Laurenchaises .
geography
Saint-Laurent-de-Neste is located about 37 kilometers southeast of the city of Tarbes in the east of the Hautes-Pyrénées department on the border with the Haute-Garonne department. The municipality consists of the village of Saint-Laurent-de-Neste and numerous hamlets and scattered settlements. The village of Saint-Laurent-de-Neste is north of the Neste . In terms of traffic, the community is on the D938. The A64 crosses the north of the municipality.
Saint-Laurent-de-Neste is surrounded by the neighboring municipalities of Villeneuve-Lécussan (in the Haute-Garonne department) in the north, Cuguron (in the Haute-Garonne department) in the northeast, Saint-Paul in the east, Montégut in the southeast, Nestier in the south as well Anères , Tuzaguet and Cantaous to the west.
history
The place appears for the first time indirectly as de Sancto Laurencio in 1281 in the documents of Bonnefont. In the Middle Ages, the place was within the Nébouzan region, which in turn was part of the Gascogne province. The parish belonged to the district La Barthe from 1793 to 1801. In addition, Saint-Laurent-de-Neste was from 1793 to 2015 within the canton of Saint-Laurent-de-Neste (1801 to 1870 canton of Nestier). From 1793 to 1801 and from 1870 to 2015 it was the capital of the canton. The municipality has been part of the Bagnères-de-Bigorre arrondissement since 1801. Until 1962, the name of the municipality was Saint-Laurent.
