Cantaous ( Gascon Eths Cantaus ) is a commune with 443 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the Hautes-Pyrénées in the region Okzitanien ; it belongs to the Arrondissement of Bagnères-de-Bigorre and the municipality of Neste Barousse . Its inhabitants call themselves Cantaousiens / Cantaousiennes .
geography
Cantaous is located about 33 kilometers southeast of the city of Tarbes in the east of the Hautes-Pyrénées department on the border with the Haute-Garonne department. The community consists of the village of Cantaous, numerous groups of houses along the D74 and D159 and a few individual farms. The Rigole du Lavet stream runs through the municipality and partially forms the northern municipal boundary. In terms of traffic, the municipality is located on the D24 and D74 and is crossed by the A64 .
Cantaous is surrounded by the neighboring communities of Pinas in the north, Villeneuve-Lécussan (in the Haute-Garonne department) in the northeast, Saint-Laurent-de-Neste in the east, Tuzaguet in the south, Escala in the west and Lannemezan in the northwest.
history
A place Les Cantaux first appeared on a Cassini map in the 18th century. In the Middle Ages, the place was within the Nébouzan region, which in turn was part of the Gascogne province. Cantaous was within the canton of Saint-Laurent-de-Neste from 1957 to 2015 . The municipality has been part of the Bagnères-de-Bigorre arrondissement since 1957. In 1957 it split from the previous municipality of Tuzaguet .
