Labastide is a French commune with 157 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Hautes-Pyrénées department in the Occitanie region (before 2016: Midi-Pyrénées ). The municipality belongs to the arrondissement of Bagnères-de-Bigorre and the canton of Neste, Aure et Louron (until 2015: canton of La Barthe-de-Neste ).
The inhabitants are called Labastidien and Labastidiennes .

Population development
After records began, the population rose to a peak of around 660 in the middle of the 19th century. In the period that followed, the size of the community fell to a level of around 160 inhabitants, which has been maintained since then, with brief recovery phases up to the turn of the millennium.

Attractions
- Labastide Caves , a system of karst caves . The main cave, called "Grotte des Cheveaux" ( German Grotto of Horses ), is known for its polychrome image of a large horse from the middle Magdalenian period . It has been classified as a Monument historique since August 3, 1983 .

Labastide is located in the AOC zones of the Porc noir de Bigorre pig breed and the Jambon noir de Bigorre ham .
sport and freetime
- The GR 78 long-distance hiking trail, called La voie des Piémonts , leads from Carcassonne to Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port, also through the center of Labastide. It is considered the Camino de Santiago alongside the four main routes in France.
- The regional long-distance hiking trail GR de Pays Tour des Baronnies de Bigorre runs in sections parallel to the GR 78 and also leads through the center of the municipality.

Personalities
Norbert Casteret , born on August 19, 1897 in Saint-Martory , died on July 20, 1987 in Toulouse , was a French speleologist . In April 1930 he examined the Labastide caves and discovered numerous depictions of animals (including a large red horse 2.15 m in length), a human mask and a human silhouette.
