Montégut is a French commune with 135 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Hautes-Pyrénées department in the Occitanie region (before 2016: Midi-Pyrénées ). The municipality belongs to the arrondissement of Bagnères-de-Bigorre and the canton of La Vallée de la Barousse (until 2015: canton of Saint-Laurent-de-Neste ).

The inhabitants are called Montéacutins and Montéacutines .

Montégut is about 29 kilometers east of Bagnères-de-Bigorre on the eastern edge of the department.

Population development

After the records began, the population rose to a peak of around 450 by the middle of the 19th century. In the following period, the size of the community fell to around 120 inhabitants during short recovery phases up to the 1970s, before reaching a level of around 135 inhabitants stabilized.

The long-distance hiking trail GR 78, called La voie des Piémonts , leads from Carcassonne to Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port and also passes through the territory of the municipality. It is considered the Camino de Santiago alongside the four main routes in France.
