Artiguemy is a French commune with 92 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Hautes-Pyrénées department in the Occitanie region (before 2016: Midi-Pyrénées ). The municipality belongs to the arrondissement of Bagnères-de-Bigorre and the canton of La Vallée de l'Arros et des Baïses (until 2015: canton of Lannemezan ).

The inhabitants are called Artigamois and Artigamoises .

Artiguemy is located about ten kilometers north-east of Bagnères-de-Bigorre in the historic vice-county of Nébouzan .

Artiguemy is surrounded by the five neighboring communities:

Artiguemy lies in the catchment area of the Adour River . The Arros , one of its tributaries, marks the natural border with the neighboring municipalities of Gourgue and Mauvezin to the east. The Ruisseau d'Espierra, a tributary of the Arros, rises on the territory of the municipality and flows along the border to the northern neighboring municipality of Chelle-Spou.

Toponymy

The Occitan name of the community is Artigamin. It has its origin in the Gascognischen artiga ( German cleared land ) together with the adjective minor ( German smaller ).

The nickname of the community is Eths vene-heishinas ( German the traders of sticks ). In earlier times the inhabitants carried these to Bagnères-de-Bigorre.

Population development

After the records began, the population rose to a high of around 225 over two years by the second half of the 19th century. In the following period, the size of the community fell to 75 inhabitants with short recovery phases until shortly after the turn of the millennium, before a phase of moderate growth began, which continues to this day.
