Sost ( Gaskognisch Sòst ) is a French commune with 92 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Hautes-Pyrénées department in the Occitanie region ; it belongs to the Arrondissement of Bagnères-de-Bigorre and the municipality of Neste Barousse . Its inhabitants call themselves Sostois / Sostoises .
geography
Sost is about 52 kilometers southeast of the city of Tarbes in the east of the Hautes-Pyrénées department on the border with the Haute-Garonne department. The community consists of the village of Sost, the hamlet of Cap de la Lane and numerous individual farms. Large parts of the community are mountainous and forested. The river Ourse de Sost has its source in the municipality of Sost and crosses the municipality in a northerly direction. The highest point in the municipality is the Sommet des Conques in the south of the municipality. In terms of traffic, the community is on the D22.
history
In the Middle Ages there was the pilgrims' hostel Sainte-Marie-Madeleine in the municipality. The place is first mentioned as a Sost around the year 1235/1236 in Bonnefont's files. In the Middle Ages, the place was within the county of Barousse in the Armagnac region , which in turn was part of the Gascogne province. The submerged communities Betpouy and Peyramilha were also located in what is now the municipality. The parish belonged to the district La Barthe from 1793 to 1801. In addition, Sost was within the canton of Mauléon-Barousse from 1793 to 2015 . The municipality has been part of the Bagnères-de-Bigorre arrondissement since 1801.
