Aventignan ( Gascon : Aventinhan ) is a French commune with 205 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Hautes-Pyrénées department in the Occitanie region ; it belongs to the arrondissement of Bagnères-de-Bigorre and the canton of La Vallée de la Barousse (until 2015: canton of Saint-Laurent-de-Neste ). The inhabitants are called Aventignanais / Aventignanaises .
geography
Aventignan is located around 40 kilometers southeast of the city of Tarbes in the east of the Hautes-Pyrénées department. The municipality consists of the village of Aventignan and numerous scattered settlements. The nest crosses the north of the municipality in an easterly direction and in parts forms the northern municipality boundary. In terms of traffic, the municipality is mainly located on the D26 and D71. The A64 passes a few kilometers north of the community.
Aventignan is surrounded by the neighboring communities of Saint-Paul in the north, Mazères-de-Neste in the northeast, Tibiran-Jaunac in the east and southeast, Générest in the south and southwest and Lombrès and Montégut in the west.
history
The place appears for the first time indirectly as de Aventinhano in the year 1387 in the church register of Comminges. In the Middle Ages, the place was within the Rivière-Verdun region, which in turn was part of the Gascogne province. The parish belonged to the district La Barthe from 1793 to 1801. In addition, Aventignan was in the canton of Nestier from 1793 to 1870 and then within the canton of Saint-Laurent-de-Neste until 2015 . The municipality has been part of the Bagnères-de-Bigorre arrondissement since 1801.
