Sarp is a French commune with 108 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Hautes-Pyrénées department in the Occitanie region . It belongs to the canton of La Vallée de la Barousse and the Neste Barousse municipal association .

geography

Sarp is located at an average altitude of 478 meters in the Barousse , a scenic region that roughly corresponds to the valley of the River Ourse , in the northern Pyrenees , 95 kilometers southwest of Toulouse , 16 kilometers southwest of Saint-Gaudens and about seven kilometers northeast of Canton capital Mauléon-Barousse , between the neighboring communities of Aveux in the southwest and Saint-Bertrand-de-Comminges in the north.

history

The place name is derived from a word in the Gascon language that means serpe ( sickle ). The inhabitants are also called Baoudanayrés in Gascon or Baudonaires in French , which means “ tripe eater ”. The patron saint of the local parish is Saint Germier de Toulouse (7th century). The Seigneurs von Binos and Sarp built a mansion on site in the 18th century .

In 1793, Sarp received the status of a municipality in the course of the French Revolution (1789–1799) and in 1801 the right to local self-government as Sarpt .
