Nistos ( Occitan : Nistòs ) is a French commune with 215 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Hautes-Pyrénées department in the Occitania region ; it belongs to the arrondissement of Bagnères-de-Bigorre and the canton of La Vallée de la Barousse (until 2015: canton of Saint-Laurent-de-Neste ). The inhabitants are called Nistosiens / Nistosiennes .

geography

Nistos is located around 41 kilometers southeast of the city of Tarbes in the east of the Hautes-Pyrénées department. The community consists of several hamlets and numerous scattered settlements. The Ruisseau de Nistos brook forms a natural eastern municipal boundary in places. Large areas are mountainous and forested. The highest point in the municipality is the Pic de Mont Aspet in the south of the municipality. In terms of traffic, the community is located on the D75 a few kilometers south of the A64 .

Nistos is surrounded by the neighboring communities of Bize in the north, Seich and Sacoué in the east, Ferrère in the south-east, Sarrancolin in the south-west and west and Hèches in the west and north-west.

history

In the Middle Ages, the place was within the Comminges region, which in turn was part of the Gascogne province. In 1844 Nistos split from the municipality of Bize . From 1844 to 1957 it was called Nistos-Haut-et-Bas. Nistos was located within the canton of Saint-Laurent-de-Neste from 1844 to 2015 . The municipality has been part of the Bagnères-de-Bigorre arrondissement since 1844.
