Générest is a French commune with 101 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Hautes-Pyrénées department in the Occitanie region (before 2016: Midi-Pyrénées ). The municipality belongs to the arrondissement of Bagnères-de-Bigorre and the canton of La Vallée de la Barousse (until 2015: canton of Saint-Laurent-de-Neste ).

The inhabitants are called Générestais and Générestaises .

Générest is located about 31 kilometers east of Bagnères-de-Bigorre on the border with the eastern neighboring department of Haute-Garonne .

Générest is surrounded by the seven neighboring municipalities:

The highest point of the municipality is on the summit of the Pic du Mont Caup at the southern tip of the municipality ( 1247 m ).

Population development

After the records began, the population rose to a peak of 505 by the middle of the 19th century. In the following years, the size of the community fell to around 80 inhabitants during short recovery phases until the 1980s, before it has since grown to a level of around 100 inhabitants stabilized.

Attractions

19th century parish church of Saint-Etienne. Its specialty is the vestibule, under which there is a passage.
