Banios is a French commune with 53 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Hautes-Pyrénées department in the Occitanie region (before 2016: Midi-Pyrénées ). The municipality belongs to the arrondissement of Bagnères-de-Bigorre and the canton of La Vallée de l'Arros et des Baïses (until 2015: canton of Bagnères-de-Bigorre ).
The inhabitants are called Baniosois and Baniosoises .

Banios is about seven kilometers southeast of Bagnères-de-Bigorre in the Nébouzan .

The highest point of the municipality is on the summit of Cap de las Penas ( 1145 m ).
Banios is located in the catchment area of the Adour River . The Esqueda, also called Ruisseau de Lalherde on the upper reaches, is a tributary of the Arros and has its source in the municipality. Its tributaries, the Ruisseau du Thou and the Ruisseau de Lauade, cross the territory of the municipality before flowing into the Esquada at Banios.
Toponymy
The Occitan name of the municipality is Baniòs. Based on the Aquitaine suffix -ossum , it seems certain that it is derived from the name of a country estate. However, the associated proper name remains unclear.

Population development
After records began, the population rose to a peak of 360 by the first half of the 19th century. In the following period, the size of the community fell with short recovery phases to a level of around 50 inhabitants by the 1990s, at which it was up stabilized today.

Banios is located in the AOC zones of the Porc noir de Bigorre pig breed and the Jambon noir de Bigorre ham .
sport and freetime
The regional long-distance hiking trail GR de Pays Tour des Baronnies de Bigorre also partly runs along the border to the southeastern neighboring municipality of Asté.
