Argelès-Bagnères is a French commune with 110 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Hautes-Pyrénées department in the Occitanie region (before 2016: Midi-Pyrénées ). The municipality belongs to the arrondissement of Bagnères-de-Bigorre and the canton of La Vallée de l'Arros et des Baïses (until 2015: canton of Bagnères-de-Bigorre ).

The inhabitants are called Argelésois and Argelésoises .

Argelès-Bagnères is located about six kilometers northeast of Bagnères-de-Bigorre in the historical county of Bigorre .

Argelès-Bagnères lies in the catchment area of the Adour River . The Luz , a tributary of the Arros , crosses the territory of the municipality, together with its tributary, the Ruisseau de Lies, and its tributary, the Ruisseau l'Estampe.

Toponymy

The Occitan name of the municipality is Argelèr. It comes from the Latin argilla with the suffix -arium and from the gascognic argelèrs ( German  clay ).

According to the decree of the French Prime Minister of August 1, 2003, the previous name of the municipality, Argelès, has been replaced by the current name Argelès-Bagnères.

Population development

After records began, the population rose to a peak of around 310 by the second half of the 19th century. In the following period, the size of the community decreased to 95 inhabitants with short recovery phases until the 1970s, before a relatively short growth phase until the turn of the millennium set in, after which a phase of stagnation began that continues to this day.
